Re: First attempt Lunt 50 DS + ASI 174MM
Very nice Hans! How do you like the ZWO? What capture software are you using?

Re: FLIR Grasshopper 3
Is anybody using the QHY5III174M? It runs at 138fps full resolution which is nearly the rating on the Grasshopper 3 for a considerably smaller investment. It does not have a separate external power jack or the built in memory buffer. I'm thinking the buffer may be overkill for my situation given the...

Re: FLIR Grasshopper 3
Hi Bart, Here's the cable only from FLIR's website as well. https://www.ptgrey.com/1-meter-circular-8-pin-pre-wired-gpio-hirose-connector Seems the pin count varies widely on the circular hirose connectors. I didn't find anything better/cheaper. Unless you want to make your own. Then you can buy a b...

Re: FLIR Grasshopper 3
Hi Mark,
Thanks for weighing in. I suspected there would be an external power advantage. I see some power supply options on eBay that would work quite nicely.

Re: FLIR Grasshopper 3
Thanks Robert and Bart for the insights. Still leaning towards the Grasshopper 3. I remain curious about the differences compared to the ZWO. I don’t see that the ZWO has any buffer memory which I suspect may play into the slower FPS. I’ve been watching the classifieds for a nice used one but it app...

FLIR Grasshopper 3
I am starting to narrow down the imaging end of my solar set up. In perusing the various resources (posts, tutorials, vendor sites, etc.) I'm finding that the Point Grey Grasshopper 3 and the ZWO ASI174MM are both very well liked by the solar imaging community. In looking at the Grasshopper (now FLI...

Re: H-alpha Zeiss APQ 130
Here's the documentation I received from Astro-physics with the handy schematic at the bottom showing how to plumb with their telecentric system. Daystar filter attachement.pdf Turns out the Daystar 100 f/15 has a 2X Barlow lens built into the focuser bringing it to the required f/30. IMG_5066.JPG S...

Re: H-alpha Zeiss APQ 130
Hi Bob and Raf, Thanks for weighing in on the fluorite question. I'm curious about the force/process that would result in the catastrophically high thermal expansion of the fluorite. I'm hoping Bob is willing to weigh in further still. :? It would seem it is only subject to ambient temperatures sinc...

Solar Grab Bag
This week I had the good fortune of running into a solar grab bag of sorts. While still focused on equipping the APQ for high quality H-alpha I ran into a very interesting pre-owned bundle of gear containing at least one of the components needed - the full aperture (130mm) mounted ERF. But there was...

Re: H-alpha Zeiss APQ 130
Thanks Stu. I'm very happy to have discovered it several days ago and have been pouring over it late in the evenings ever since :) . Wonderful resource! Re: H-alpha Zeiss APQ 130
Hi Alexandra, Thank you for the reply and advice. I vaguely recall Solarscope (hailing from the Isle of Man) as being at the apex of consumer etalons, a spot they appear to still occupy. Unfortunately, it is an investment I'm not yet ready to make. I'm thinking I may opt for a rear mounted option at...

H-alpha Zeiss APQ 130
Way back in 2007 while attending NEAF, I had the pleasure of looking through a Zeus APQ 130 that was set-up with a Coronado 90mm etalon. The view was unforgettable. At the time I owned a Solarmax 40 so I had some perspective on the h-alpha solar observing experience. Additionally, there were other c...
