Re: Coronal and prominence views from sea level
Excellent George ! The Ha version is amazing. Only a coronagraph can have such a detectivity away from the solar limb. I was wondering if the IMX 533 from Player One could be worth considering. It has a huge dynamic range, much larger than the ASI1600. But this would be only beneficial to Ha images,...

Hi, Here is set of images taken on March 7 with various filters from the continuum at 540 nm to Ca K. Baader 540 nm is a nice all arround filter. That would be a really exciting possibility. Laszlo Hi Laszlo, This is quite good considering the low altitude of the Sun. Wh...

What is the peak transmission of your 0.37 nm filter ?

The 850 nm is very interesting since it shows plages accross the solar disk, a bit as a very low contrast Ca II IR filter.
Well done !
It would be interesting to compare this 850 nm filter to a G-band filter or a 393-3 nm (if you have one of these filters).

Splendid Mark !
The FD and the close-up images are great. The proms turn out very well !
I still have to do more tests to check if is better to take specific (longer) exposures for the proms, or not.
It could be that these current proms are very bright in Ca K.

I don't think a double stack BF will help. I've done some simulations to test the idea some times ago, but 1 nm is way too large. It makes no difference. There is some benefits of double-stacking starting at about 2 A filter (and of course below). So, practically it means double stacking with a Lunt...

Re: Question about QUARK CAH bandwidth?
Interesting. I would have thought a 5a design would be quite easy to do with filters alone. Given that the Quark Ca H is thermo-regulated, it is most probable that it is a mica-spaced etalon. On top of that the DayStar Quantum Ca K (or H) 2 A and 5 A filters are mica-spaced etalons. So the mica use...

Re: Question about QUARK CAH bandwidth?
Since it is a 5A filter it will remain at 5A at its best i would say. I read the initial question too fast. The curve from DayStar DayStar is for 0.5 A Ha filters, so I thouch the question was about 0.5 A Ha Quark ... As said by Dennis, at f/30-40, a 5 A Ca K filter will have an effective FWHM of 5...

Re: Barlow with Lunt CaK
What size is your Barlow lens ?
As long as the light beam does not touch the metal body of the Barlow, there is no issue.
In orther words, you can use : refractor > Barlow lens > Lunt Ca K with no problem if the light beam passes only through the lens of the Barlow and does not touch its body.

Re: Question about QUARK CAH bandwidth?
I am sorry to say this curve from DayStar white paper is completely wrong. It is impossible to have a material (mica, fused silica, or whatever) giving a curve like this. The best possible fit is to have an index of 1.96 for the etalon gap, which is very far from the 1.65 index of mica. See more in ...

Re: [Beginner] Help with noisy background
Hi,
The 5x Barlow is really too much. You should use a 3x instead, in order to have a f/30 ratio, which is fine given the pixel size of the IMX174.
The, you will have more light which, in combination to using an exposure time around 4-5 ms, will allow to use a much lower gain.

Askar FRA500 is a 500mm focal length petzval. Just for the record, a Petzval is made of two doublets. So, the FRA 500 is definitely not a Peztval given it is a triplet + doublet. On top of that, Askar placed a patent on the design, which won't be possible if if was a Petzval. On the other hand, the...

You need to tune the 0.1 nm filter right on Ca K to have some detection of the fibrils. Do you have a tilt mount ?
Is it simple-stack or double-stack ?
