ZWO ASI174MM (mono)
ZWO ASI174MM (mono)
Hi everyone.
Next year I plan to focus more in doing solar, planetarium observation, outreach and pictures. But, I figure it out that I need a better camera that the one I have.
I own 2 cameras:
The DMK51 and the SKYRIS 445 both monochromatic cameras.
I use the DMK with out problems but, the frame rate is too low (12fps) compared to another cameras.
The think that I like about the DMK is the chip size. Big and I don't have much problem with the setting on Firecapture when I'm doing a solar mosaic, is almost no change when I move the mount to get another part of the sun.
For the other hand the Skyris is faster but I have too many problems with the settings. Not sure if it's because of me or what I am doing wrong and now I don't want to deal with it anymore.
This bring me to looking for a big chip camera with a high frame rate. A CCD camera is what I do like but, they are way out of my budget.
So, I was texting with Christopher Go and he recommended me one with the IMX174 chip.
I was looking examples for solar pictures with that chip and I got this:
http://solarchat.natca.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13277
I bet the camera is a Point Grey camera but, those are out of my Budget.
Christopher Go was recommended me the ZWO ASI174MM (mono) camera that has the same chip and it's right on my budget.

So. For the camera question here:
Anybody here has tested the ZWO camera for solar?

Re: ZWO ASI174MM (mono)
I've just made the similar decision and moved from the DMK51 to the ASI174.
I believe there is minimal Newton Ring issues and the results at the higher frame rate will be ideal for the spectroheliograph application.

Lots of people use the 174mm for solar with great success.

Cool. I will try to buy the camera by January and see what I can do with it.

Now I want to ask to Pedro Re how good is the camera in calcium and White light.
Maybe he can post something here, maybe.

Mark, you will, probably, not believe me, but I am the one, who denied a ZWO ASI174 for solar imagingmarktownley wrote:Lots of people use the 174mm for solar with great success.
and prefer an old good PGR Flea3 ICX445 mono, despite slower fps.
May be I need better seeing and more sunny weather, but for now this ZWO just gazers a dust on my table.
I were quite disappointed.

I would ask Pedro on his current post in the solarchat forum, I am sure he will respond quickly. Not everyone reads all the other areas.

Here are a few examples of solar images taken with my ZWO ASI174MM. It is a nice camera for solar imaging (3 lights) but I still use my GRASSHOPPER 3 2.8 MP MONO (GS3-U3-28S5M-C) most of the times.

I did not tilt my camera for the FD images (setups used). However you will have to deal with newton rings most of the times in HR work. This is the reason I prefer the GS3-U3-28S5M-C

I will use the camera for HR pictures on mosaic (2 x) pictures so, I will have the rings all over the place.
I found on Facebook a link for this:

So, I think this may solve my problems.
