Would this camera work for Ha solar astronomy

A new planetary camera from QSI looks interesting but don't know if it would be a good choice for solar (both DayStar Quark Chromosphere equipped 152mm APO refractor and 60mm Ha Coronado filters on 80mm APO refractor).

The cameras is a QHY 5-III462 single shot color which also shoots IR mono. Very high frame rate with high sensitivity and tiny pixel size.

I know that mono cameras have advantages for solar (what I have now) but this looks very interesting.

It looks like the sun finally is going to get more active in this cycle. I have been putting off upgrading my camera to avoid buyers remorse if I get one too soon and it is quickly bypassed with a better/cheaper camera.

No, wouldn't be great. It's a colour camera. The ZWO290M is same spec but mono, this would be great with the 60mm coronado, but you would be very much oversampling with the quark, for this something with larger pixels would be better.

Hi Mark,

He can bin 2x2 and so he gets a bigger pixel ;)

Indeed, this is true. With also a improvement in sensitivity but with a smaller frame size.

Hi Mark,

Yes. Life is a compromise

FOV will be same but as you said half the pixels in width and height. Instead of 1920 x 1080 it would be 960 x 540.

The ASI 290MM has also a pixel size of 2.9 micron while the ASI 174MM has a 5.86 micron pixel and 1936 x 1216 pixels.

I am shooting my White Light images with an ASI 290MM Cool (discontinued).

Hi RKBerta,

It is not QSI but QHY the camera producer.

QSI is a high end deep space camera producer owned by ATIK in Portugal and they do not make Planetary cameras.

I think the 290MM will be the next camera I get next year when activity picks up a bit...

The ASI290MM is a good choice. I have the 290MC that I use for imaging planets but the mono version is much more efficient

Thanks all....good info. The reason I asked about the ATIK camera is that is the brand I use for one of the cameras I use for deep sky and I really like it. Will look into other choices in mono dedicated to Ha only. That ASI 290m will be on my choices list.
