Use of oil spaced vs. air spaced telescope refractor optics

Post by RKBerta »

I am curious is there is an issue with using a refractor with oil spaced elements for solar astronomy such as with a Hershel Wedge? My refractors are all air spaced elements but a fellow club member has a TEC 135 which has oil spaced elements. He was interested in solar viewing with a Hershel Wedge like mine but I told him that I wasn't sure if that would be a problem. Figure BAADER astro solar film on the main aperture would be fine but the wedge.....?

Oil-spaced seems to be just fine for solar according to Baader, and TEC indicates oil-spaced is even more so compared to air-spaced.

I use a Baader Herschel wedge on my TEC140 for hours, no problem at all :)
