Solar Kit for Sale

Post by Astrograph »

Hi all

I am a vendor offering a growing range of solar oriented product in the UK. Unlike others we also try and keep things in stock and offer a complete advice and after sales service.

Its probably easier to go to our website Astrograph dot net and look at the solar section. However things are always being added. Highlights at the moment are

Daystar ION 0.5A Filter on Sale. This is reduced to £2350 to make way for a 0.3A Quantum we will put on demonstration.

Daystar Quarks (Chromosphere). Back in stock, end of this week (customs permitting!)

Daystar Interference Eliminator. We always keep these for when Newtons Rings get in your way (not on site)

EMC Solar Shields. Essential for any solar observing

EMC Solar Finders. Excellent little finder

EMC White Light Filters from 3" all the way up to fit a 16" in stock

K-Line filters always in stock

APM / Lunt Herschel Wedges. Best value wedge around.

Point Grey Blackfly with ICX692 chip. Probably the best little camera out there. over 70% QE and Dynamic Range.

Best Regards

Rupert

Hi Rupert

can you offer us a high end CaK filter/filterset ?

Ca-K filter

Post by Astrograph »

High end Ca-K modules are something of a 'mmm' is that worth it compared to the regular Lunt. The Lunt module offers pretty good value on the face of it but when you up the blocking filter it starts to get expensive. Adding a K-Line filter to it seems to be a cheap ish) way of getting more out of it.

Daystar make a Ca-K (and Ca-H, H-Beta, Sodium D and Helium D3) filter but the Calcium are PE grade for research applications so expensive. There are still all 2A.

What I have already talked about with Daystar is a Ca-K Quark with either the 2x or 4.2x barlow options. The response from them has been positive but its not a simple question of just changing the filter in a standard Quark, its a new design and they have already said the 2x version is the next development.

As Calcium is all imaging then I think a Ca-K Quark would be a hit. Time will tell if it gets developed.

I kinda hope they don't make a CaK Quark with a magnification factor already built in (2x or 4.2x) - a zero power version would be best...

Re: Ca-K Quark

Post by Astrograph »

A Ca-K Quark would still need a 2x /4x barlow because light has to pass through the etalon parallel. Because Ca-K filters tend to all be 2A, you can be less critical so instead of F30, F15~20 is OK. A solar scope like a Lunt / Coronado creates the parallel light beam internally, but for rear mounted filters you have to meet this criteria somehow, either with an aperture stop or barlow.

Can I ask why you would want a zero power version? With the Quarks standard 20mm etalon, approx 2000mm of focal length gives you a full solar disc. I think this is a really a minimum for image scale and personally prefer 2500~3000mm.

Of course there are many excellent images taken with short focal length solar scopes but for practical reasons a rear mounted Ca-K has to operate from F15 upwards so dictates barlows.

It would be a big chipped camera to get a full disk around 2000mm! Most of the time, certainly from where i'm observing I would be struggling to image CaK effectively and not get blurry images at 2500mm fl. Seeing allows me to effectively image on a regular basis up to around 1000mm fl, half a dozen times a month at ~1500mm, maybe once a month at 2000mm, and beyond that maybe a couple of times a year if i'm lucky.

I was not suggesting imaging a whole disc, just that you can see one!

With a Ca-K Quark you would still need to get the f number up to at least 15. So practically it means a barlow. You could do it with an aperture stop but on a small scope resolution will then be pants....

Interesting discussion Astrograph which I find interesting for a number of reasons:
1. I live quite close to Mark and, I guess, experience similar seeing.
2. I have been doing some experiments recently; trying to push my Lunt60 + CaK1200 to its limits.....

http://solarchat.natca.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12642
3. Having just ordered a Lunt 100 with about 3 months to wait....... I could be tempted to play with a Quark while I wait (assuming that they are any more available than the Lunt at the moment) as I suspect it would work quite well with my Equinox 80 and 120mm scopes and possibly with the Tal 100RS I have for CaK use on really good days?

Astrograph is a quality site, thanks for the heads up.
There is an obvious love of the hobby in your selection of goods and very good pricing at first look and I would recommend a look.
Good UK prices too.

As much as this may sound like I am on commission, I am not :)
Cheers,
Fraz.

Hi Grimble

Quarks are a bit like hens teeth at the moment. My next shipment is all pre-sold bar one chromosphere, with the next in 3-4 weeks. Daystar can't keep up because of its stupid value. I had a quite amazing image sent to me today by a customer using a Quark with an additional front etalon to double stack.I would post it but need to ask permission first.

The next batch is also not likely to last long as I am sponsoring an attempt on the worlds biggest solar image using Quarks / APM 100/800's and PGR cameras in September.

So there is one Quark available for shipping next week, then its weeks.......

3 months for a Lunt 100 is a bit mad. You could get a research grade Quantum in that time but I guess its not something they keep in stock.

Fraz, thanks for your kind comments. One day the site will have everything on it including the extended tutorials section that's never really got finished. Just not enough hours in the day.....
