Compact Littrow Spectrohelioscope - Any interest in an "IKEA" Kit???
Re: Compact Littrow Spectrohelioscope - Any interest in an "IKEA" Kit???
Colin,
Is there any real reason you would consider a mechanical spectrohelioscope, when the "electronic" version seems much easier to make and just as capable???
I like using the eyepiece. I am not sure why, it just feels better.

Need the match the camera resolution to frame rate to scope focal length to keep the pixels square! Previous digital reconstructed Images I have seen look a bit streaky and low res, I'm sure we are going to do better! Am I right in remembering that christian buil had some suitable software? Seems we will be trading registax resolution enhancement for simultaneous spectral capability, good to add to ones solar armoury.

Peter,
Yes, there are still some challenges!
There are a few software solutions around, I don't think that will be the problem and the more people who get involved in spectrohelioscopes the more we'll drive the boundaries....
(If you catch up with Maurice - pass on my regards!)

Joe who posts here as a very nice digital spectrohelioscope.

The proposed Spectrohelioscope would not be suitable for your outreach programs, but a Spectra-L200 fitted with a 300 l/mm would be very good. Could be fitted with a 20mm eyepiece and set up on a sturdy photographic tripod (no telescope)...this would show the whole solar spectrum and resolve the Ca H&K, G band, Mg triplet, Na doublet and show the Ha and atmospheric absorption lines..
Something like this really is what appeals to me...

Any update on a prototype firstlight? Guess its cloud dependent! Mark a DVD spectroscope should show the main Fraunhofer lines, will need a narrow slit. I tried with a cd one and looked at a cloud, definite dark lines present.

Cheers Peter, Done that, fancy something that shows a bit more - ideally something quite small I can attach a colour webcam to demonstrate the solar spectrum at outreach / school... My knowledge of things specroscope wise is pretty much nil.

Ken,
I can not really justify owning a spectrometer that can not measure etalons. I would rather it goes to someone who will use it often.
However, I am still quite interested in this idea. While I would rather have a visual SHS, I think the simplicity of the sweep idea would be a good first step. If I can be of any help please let me know.

Wah,
This project hasn't progressed...
The Littrow style spectroscope/ spectrohelioscope would be fitted behind a suitable refractor (I'd say minimum 60-80mm aperture)The weight would be typically around 1Kg - so the mount would have to hold the weight of the scope plus 1kg.
Remember for solar spectra you really don't need an equatorial mount. Short exposures on an alt-az would work just as well.

What can we/I do to move the project forward? Do you have any sketches or design notes that you are willing to share?

Re: Compact Littrow Spectrohelioscope - Any interest in an "IKEA" Kit???
ken,
I have a couple of "time sensitive" projects already on the go...
A reflective slit guiding module for spectroscopes and a neat compact medium res spectroscope targeting faint objects like variable stars, Nova and SN.
When these are out of the way, I'll re-visit the spectrohelioscope...
In the meantime my book "Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs" contains a whole section, Section 3, p133-226 on basic spectroscope design and construction.
Hope this helps.
Drop me an email if you need specific details.
