Slightly OT : info request on using Flickr

Post by DJD »

I have never used flickr and have just opened an account to
view images hosted there in my postings on here.
Does anyone have a tutorial on simple layout and what you address you use on
here in order to access the largest image ?
Best wishes
David

I know Alexandra Hart also uses flikr so maybe she can add something here.

Flickr is a free photo hosting site and they make it difficult for you to share your photo because they make their money by people going to their site to see it.

If you sign in and find a photo you want to share, there should be a right pointing curved "share" arrow on the bottom right of the photo. If you click it, it gives you all the ways to share your image and looks like this:
Flikr 2.jpg
Flikr 2.jpg (68.43 KiB) Viewed 6430 times
Make sure that you have the "Grab the HTML/BB code" radio button selected

You can choose whatever size image you want to show (if the image is larger than 1200 pixels wide, the forum will resize it to 1200 pixels) by clicking the box and choosing it:
Flikr 1.jpg
Flikr 1.jpg (66.89 KiB) Viewed 6430 times
Then you simply copy the code and paste it into your message like this. You don't need to use our "IMG" button as flikr puts the "IMG" tags in there for you.

If someone clicks the photo it takes them to the Flikr site.

P.S. you can also use Facebook as your image repository and simply follow the instructions in the first post about embedding images from there.

Just what Stephen said except it looks like this to me:

ImagePost from Flickr by Mike Garbett, on Flickr

Not sure why it looks different......... maybe a UK/US thing?

If its a large image, a + will appear at upper left. Clicking this gives an enlarged view........clicking the - which then appears takes you straight back to the post. I find this to be better than clicking the image which, as Stephen said, takes you to the Flickr site.......... you then have to 'back button' to return to Solarchat.

Thank you Mike.
One other question, where do you select the image from - the photostream or the
camera roll ?
( I know , I am very new to this, I used to handcraft my website - I am so old :-( )
Best wishes,
David

From the Photostream David. The camera roll gives the same 'curly arrow' but it is labelled 'share' and only seems to allow 'sharing' to Facebook, Twitter etc. whereas you want the BBCode which is then 'copy/pasted' to your Solarchat post.

Talk about old............................... I was 'talking' to computers using 'machine code' back in the early 70s.
When the Commodore 64 came out in 1981 we couldn't imagine what anyone would find to do with 64 kilobytes of ROM memory or how you could ever have a 'programme' large enough to fill the new 3.5" discs with their massive 360 kilobyte capacity :o

Who said 'anything more than 20 years in the future would be seen as 'magic' by the people of today'

Yep that sounds right! click on the image you want to share so it is the only photo in view in the Photostream, then at the bottom right there is a curly arrow, click on that and select BBcode. Then click on the size you want. I always choose large, the forum resizes it but if you click on the magnifier it opens out into the size you picked. If you upload a gif Flickr will not show it running until you go to 'all sizes' and click 'original'. In the forum click 'original' and copy that BB code and it will run in the forum post.

Mike, I noticed the difference in the BBCode dialogue box compared to Stephen. I have copied and pasted the link but it is the link that shows in Solarchat rather than the image; any advice would be appreciated.

Can you post a screen shot? are you definitely on BBCode or on embed?

Alexandra, I have it now thanks. I just paste the link without the IMG bits and it worked. Thanks for your help.
