Eclipse video

Post by derekkuhl »

I was wondering what people thought about capturing video of the eclipse. I was originally going to be part of the Citizen Cate project https://sites.google.com/site/citizencateexperiment/
but I did not want to commit to one location and then miss the eclipse due to clouds. I had been planning on replicating the Citizen Cate equipment and taking a video on my own but I am now wondering if that is a waste of time and energy. I have yet to see an eclipse video that has any kind of quality at all and I have no reason to believe that my effort will be better than the rest. It is definitely possible that I am missing some great ones thought. The best I have seen has been on the Citizen Cate training video from 2016 in Tanjung Pandan.

Now I am thinking that a timelapse may be a better idea given more flexibility in acquiring good exposures. If I were to do a video, I would like to record from first contact to the last. I would obviously bee shooting through a filter for everything but totality.

Does anyone have any experience with this and can give some recommendations?

Derek,
A very warm welcome :hamster: I would think taking a video would be quite hard, the CATE experiment will be using quite advanced techniques to draw out the information from the videos afterwards. If I were you I would stick to still images and keep taking a series of exposures during the eclipse, you can then put them together to get a much better image of the full corona. I found this link which helps to work out what exposure range would be good for your set up.
Remember, most important is to watch it, not take pictures. I am trying to learn my exposures off by heart and learning how many clicks equals which exposure as I do not want to be looking at my camera.
