My kit for the solar eclipse, tested in my back garden

Post by michael.h.f.wilkinson »

Just before leaving I did a last balance test of the kit I plan to use. Fortunately, I have a little band of sherpas (my sons) who are very happy to carry part of the kit in their carry-on luggage. The kit consists of my APM 80 mm triplet, with Ca-K module and ASI178MM, and my Canon EOS 700D with 100-400 mm zoom and 1.5x tele-converter, both carried on an EQ3-2, with a DIY "travel counterweight". I filled this with sand, and taped the battery pack to it, and got perfect balance.

All survived the trip to the USA, so hopefully the weather gods will be clement, come the big day.

Solar kit: GP-C8 with Thousand Oaks Solar filter, APM 80mm F/6, Lunt Herschel Wedge, Solar Spectrum 0.3Å H-alpha filter, Beloptic Tri-Band ERF (80mm free aperture), Thousand Oaks 90mm ERF, Coronado SolarMax II 60mm with Double Stack Unit. Lunt straight B1800 Ca-K module.
