ISS Solar Transit 14th June 2020

Post by Carbon60 »

Inspired by Mark T's ISS transit images from last week I checked online for one local to me anytime soon. To my great surprise I found one scheduled to occur directly over my home here in the NW of England. Bullseye.... right on the centre line (within 200 m), which is astonishing, as every time I'd checked in recent years it would have involved a bit of a trek. Hoping that the weather would cooperate I spent some time this morning trying to optimise my setup and trying to decide between WL and CaK and then full disk or partial disk with a little more magnification..... I was lucky that the sky was pretty clear for about an hour or so before the scheduled event at 13:29:21 which allowed my to get everything set up and tested. All I needed now was for the sky to remain clear. Of course, the clouds started to roll in and I was on edge for about 45 minutes hoping that distant blue on the horizon would move to where I needed it. That didn't happen, but luckily for me the clouds did thin enough to allow me to capture the transit for the most part. You'll see in the stupidly large GIF file (140 MB) that it was close to being a total washout with thicker clouds rolling across the screen towards the end of the split second event.

Anyhow, here are some images:

These closer views are just cropped from the almost full disk views with a little extra processing to try to drag out some further detail.

....and here's the large GIF if you have the patience to wait for it to load (my internet speed is abominable).

A couple of reworks:

I've been waiting for one of these for such a long time.... It finally came together okay, by the 'skin of my teeth' as we say.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Cool transit, Stu. Congratulations on capturing it.
There's some surprising detail that you managed to extract on the ISS.

Looks like those clouds shouldn't have come 30 seconds earlier. Very nice, Stu.

Incredible set of captures Stu!! You got it all right when it counted. Imaging is the only way to really do this. It would happen all too fast visually.

Many thanks, everyone. It was a really close call with the weather. Thankfully it worked out okay.

Wow!!!! :hamster: :hamster: :hamster: :hamster: well done!! and so sharp too!

I had a Calsky alert this weekend too, the recommended viewing area was the top of mount Snowdon  I clicked the delete button. It makes me wonder why it didn't alert me to your transit? why the top of the mountain instead? No luck here for a couple for years :(

The Hubby is very impressed too, he has just had a view and loves the close up, he wants to know where the Dragon module is?

I just saw this and I thought this will be good but its excellent. The clouds really add to the effect. Stu one of the best transits I,ve seen. Make sure you store a backup somewhere.
