Sunny Sunday morning 19th July '20

Post by Carbon60 »

The weather report for today was not totally correct. We were supposed to have a lovely sunny day for the most part, but by mid-morning yet again the clouds rolled in and then things got patchy throughout the rest of the day. Thankfully I managed to do what I needed to do before the opportunity was lost.

I've been thinking for a while about doing an animation of surface granulation and after a couple of failed attempts I had a plan to take a continuous sequence of 10s bursts, but for that I needed a clear sky without any fluffy clouds to spoil the flow. This morning was perfect for that. More on that later.

First up a hydrogen alpha full disk using my Lunt 60.

Then over to Ca II K and a few views of a little patch of plage in the south west.

Then on to 'white light' views (540nm continuum) with my Lacerta wedge. Full disk and some closer granulation shots with, finally, the animation.

The animation comprises 17 frames collected sequentially in 10s bursts, so just around 3 minutes in total, yet close inspection shows a significant amount of movement. Previously I had waited too long between frames so my attempts were always too 'jumpy'. This has better flow, capturing the rapid changes over the short imaging period quite well I think. Room for improvement, but my best so far.

Thanks for looking.

All the images are superb Stu, however I particularly like the Lunt 60 as that is the same scope I have.
