AR12678 31st July

Post by marktownley »

Hi All,

Yesterday was up and early first thing with blue skies before the rising heat took temperatures into the mid 30s by the afternoon and then by evening the temperature had dropped 10 degrees accompanied by thunderstorms, all in a days weather! I was keen to refresh my memory of my 5" scope, this has been stopped down to 118mm to take it to f10, and the spacing between the flint and crown components of the objective increased to improve performance at either end of the spectrum. I'm pleased with it's performance in Ha, and when seeing allows is a good scope at 656nm, and if seeing does not allow I have the fall back of the SM90. In CaK it's not as good, and the images are soft, much softer than with the 100mm TaL refractor, however it's fun to try, and with this shot the seeing was definitely not quite as good as the aperture allowed, but it just about works and gives nice scale. (118mm f27). Camera for both shots was the FLIR IMX174, and with suitably (transparent) filtration exposure time is kept short of 5ms at all times.

It's nice to have some activity to look at currently!

Hope is sunny where you are, looks like i'm in for a day of cloud...

Mark

Very nice images indeed Mark :bow :hamster: for some reason my magnifier glass on Flickr doesn't work on this computer and so I have to go to view all sizes then large, any ideas how I can set the magnifier or is that a default in Flickr?

They do look good at full size though :)

A fine set of images. How did you establish the optimal lens spacing for H-alpha ?

Thanks Dan, Alexandra and Raf!

Alexandra, i've no idea how to do the magnifier thing in flickr? When I click on them it just pulls them up large then I click again for full size.

Raf, I just put some thicker foil spacers between the lenses (take away food carton) - nothing scientific, just probably increased the spacing by 100%.

In the mean time here's a 8 frame ani over 7 minutes of some coronal rain from that flame prom,

Hi Mark,

Very good images. Interesting is that in CaK you see the pores and in H-alpha they are not visible.

Very nice work Mark! All are great but I love the big prom rain animation. That is a lot of ongoing change for seven minutes. That is one thing I love about solar astronomy. The Sun is always in constant motion/change.

Superb images, Mark. Your seeing conditions were better than mine and you can see that with your superior resolution of the finer details in CaK. Lovely.

The animation is sublime. Beautifully captured plasma rain condensing from the tall stack. Quite mesmerising.
