18.10.20 AR2776 in apalling seeing.

Post by Rusted »

Cloudy morning followed by brighter intervals with dreadful seeing.
I had to use the PST BF to drag any detail out of the mush.

Well Rusted, considering your "dreadful seeing" conditions, you certainly have very-well captured the action today,
so thanks vm for sharing

Despite the poor conditions you captured some great details...almost looks like a bit of flaring in the AR too!!!

You did well considering the seeing Rusted. You got the granulation and the thin filaments. That certainly counts for something.

Thank you all for your kind words. :bow

I was in two minds over sharing these.
The worse the seeing, the harder I have to work ImPPG for detail.
It can produce a strangely artificial look to my daubs which I really dislike.
While simultaneously I don't want to hide the detail.

Fortunately I was able to restrain myself with the white light image.
I could have hardened the cells but preferred a more natural look.
The spot was easily seen visually at 50x in my old, 90mm f/10 Vixen with the Lunt wedge + B SC filter.

At least the poor seeing allowed me time to play with etalon settings, optical element rotation, etc.
So it's not all bad news. Except that nothing I tried actually helped today.
Except for gaining more practice and using failure to increase my knowledge.
All thanks to the expert advice offered here. It can save years of trial and error. :bow

Only substitution of the Lunt BF with the trusty PST BF allowed me to cut through the poor seeing today.
Normally the Lunt B1200S2 is the automatic choice, for surface detail, with obviously far greater clarity.
While it is clearly inferior on proms due it its demands for noise-producing gain.

I spent quarter of an hour trying to block out that big white Blob in image handling software.

I almost 'cloned' over it!

I have merged the three videos which captured the flare and uploaded them to YouTube as a single video.

A glance at the video quality will confirm the dire seeing conditions on the 18th.

The flare appears to be a "four headed dragon" at times. This was lost in the processing to single images.

Rusted,
I started observing just after that and may have caught the flare past peak. I need to get more familiar with Universal Time related to my time zone. Currently it's about four hours different. If I translate EDT to UT correctly the flare peaked a little after 10:30 EDT and I started my session around 11:00. I remember a white spot at the apex of the V shaped plage. Exactly where the flare was. Anyway, you captured it excellently. A well deserved SPOD it is.

James
