Dec. 23, 2020 visual simulation

Post by Astrophil »

Hi All,

Today was clear and not too cold so I took a look at the sun through the LS 80. I rarely put my eye to the eyepiece but I gave it try. Not being an experienced solar observer I was a little underwhelmed and after about an hour of tuning the two etalons the best I could, I just put the camera back on. I left the tuning the way it was to see what the camera could record with my best visual tuning compared to what I saw.

I am curious as to how much detail and contrast other observers can see through the eyepiece of their scope so I produced an image showing what I saw. I suspect that I can’t see Ha wavelengths very well. Your comments would be welcome.

I let the camera and software do the work on the other images.

Phil

The EP image is about right albeit adjustable for proms or surface detail.

The camera images are excellent

Thanks vm

 that looks just like what I see, although the longer I look the more I see like the camera image. The Solarscope does have great contrast though :)

I love the red image it makes me smile :)
Merry Christmas

Phil,
It takes a bit of practice to learn to see in hydrogen alpha. The more you do it the more you will see. I don’t think the eye will ever catch a good monochrome image but with practice you will be surprised at what you can see.

That first ha-red image is a decent approximation of a visual view. Very well done 👍🏻. I wish more people would do natural red images. They make good guide photos and I love the more natural look.

James.
