August 24th in Ha

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

I figured I better get some images processed and posted before they get old ;)

It certainly has been a great week with nice active features to observe and image, and it has been great to follow the posts. Despite the long stretch of clear skies at home I only made it out on Tuesday this week to image. It has been unseasonably hot and dry here, usually hitting 30C before noon and still in the mid 20's at 11pm when out trying to get Jupiter. Daytime seeing was poor this session, and didn't push the focal length on the higher resolution images too much.

First is the full disk Ha composite taken through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha and the ASI1600MM with a 1.6x barlow:

The balance of the images were taken through the modded Orion EON 130ED fitted with he pair of Lunt DSII etalons and B1800Ha blocker, and a 1.3x barlow ahead of the ASI290MM camera. The two prominent AR's on the eastern disk were the stars of the show. Below is AR2859:

AR2860 was newly arrived on the SW limb, and trailed a long line of filaments which stretched across the southern disk. This first image is of the AR on its own:
AR2860-Ha_13xOR130.jpg
AR2860-Ha_13xOR130.jpg (256.9 KiB) Viewed 512 times
I assembled this mosaic of the southern disk from 10 images:

The poor seeing made the proms more difficult to capture detailed images due to the longer exposures. The prom on the SW limb turned out a bit better than the NW one:

That finishes off the solar work for this week, and will see if we get clear skies overt the weekend. Could stand an all day rain, so for the sake of the corn and soybeans I can sit out a day ;)

To close, a pic of today's sunset:

Take care everyone,
Brian

Brian,
I really enjoyed this set. All are extraordinary! I think the 4th image is my favorite. The colored image of AR12859 and it's surroundings. It's absolutely beautiful.

30C!! and you are in Canada! We have had only a few days here that hot all summer and that's only been during the afternoon hours. 88F ( 31C ) is the hottest we've got all summer.

Have a good weekend.

James

That’s a beautiful sunset, Brian. Excellent Ha images too. Your set up is working very nicely.

James, Stu. Maurits, Terry, and Franco...

Thanks to each of you for your comments and feedback on the session...always appreciated :bow

James, 30C in the summer isn't that uncommon here but we have had a long stretch of them this month. As big as Canada is I'm tucked into the southern tip, nestled between the Great Lakes.

Stuart, yes I am quite happy with the DS mod on the Orion OTA. I need to get the internal reflections/glare cleaned up and have a circular polarizer to try the next clear day.
