river and forest

Post by Ivan »

A couple of photos from a country walk. The Volga froze so that you can drive a car along it. In some places in our region, special crossings are equipped, where the thickness of the ice is examined daily and the passage for cars is cleaned.

This time we did not cross the river on foot, because daughter was tired, we just walked on the ice near the shore, and then went into the forest.

Thanks Rainer.
My sky looks like this, with rare exceptions, since November, and will remain so until April :)

So beautiful :hamster: and very different view to the summer. It is interesting to hear about the car crossings :)

If only we could have some snow occasionally ;)

Alexandra,
A little about car crossings along the river. This is normal in northern areas. And saves travel time. In our region, such a move across the ice reduces 100 km of travel, and costs 2.3 pounds :). Here is not my photo of such crossings.

Lovely to see how others live and take for granted.
Please post more views, it is cloudy and wet here again.
Best wishes,

That is really interesting Ivan, if these routes are so valuable in winter I wonder what will happen over the next 20 years with climate change :(

These crossings are mostly valuable to the locals. They are useless for interregional logistics. The maximum weight of a car that can pass is 3.5 tons, so big trucks and the main traffic will still go through the bridges.
Ferry crossings are organized in the summer, many have boats, some offer their services, so there is a way out.
By the way, if a thaw suddenly occurs in winter, then the crossing is closed until the ice becomes strong again.

Hi Ivan...

Thanks for posting the pics Ivan...I like the snowy scenery :bow

In northern Canada (far north of my place  ) roads are made to cross frozen lakes to allow more direct routes to remote communities in order to deliver goods and building materials that are too expensive or impractical to ship via small planes or inland with no roads to be reached from larger ships.

Closest we have is people driving out to fish on frozen Lake Simcoe', but most use snowmobiles and ATV's. Some still take trucks out and every year some go through the ice...makes a rather expensive fish

Thanks Brian

It also happens to us that cars fall through the ice. But this happens not at crossings (they strictly monitor the state of the ice), but in unequipped places. And especially often, just like you, this happens with fishermen. We have a huge Rybinsk reservoir, a little north of me. It is so big that you can not see the opposite shore. There is good fishing, and closer to spring or at the very beginning of winter, while the ice is not strong, such cases happen.
However, on the ice floes in the spring, fishermen are also carried away and they are rescued by rescuers.

It turns out that fishing in winter is an extreme sport :)
