Just showing off a bit ...

Hi,

In a terrestrial photography group we members were talking about making panoramas using a nodal slide and as a challenge I tested such a panorama inside the cold room of my Observatory which is 2.74m wide x 3.50m long centering as good as possible the camera.

This is 360° made out of 48 images eg. 7.5° steps using 11mm focal length, Canon Zoom EF 11-24mm 4.0 L USM on a Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera.

After some failures and trials Photoshop finally manged to make the auto align process and then applied an auto blend. A bit of highlight tweaking, contrast and brightness and a unsharpmask touch.

From left to right West door, ladder North wall, East window and South Palmtree.

Thanks Rainer,
I am also learning about panoramas and nodal sliders....for Milky Way photography !!!
I will take a look at your photo.
Any advice on sliders/nodal rails as I did see a very expensive set on Really Right stuff website, or is it the more affordable ones from China these days ?

Thanks.

Hi Magnus,

Take a look at what Neewer has as they look quite sturdy... but as always you get what you pay for.

https://www.amazon.se/s?k=neewer+rail+n ... nb_sb_noss

but they are not complete sets ...

I bought long ago the Fanotec brand and at the moment what I have is reduced in price. I have the Nodal M1-L

https://www.fanotec.com/

https://www.fanotec.com/m1-l-rd16-ii/29

and I also added the leveller

Hi Rainer,

I think the problem comes with multiple rows of horizontal panoramas. A single line of images should be ok. Did you find the correct nodal point (no parallax point) in your lens/camera combination ok.

I did come across a good panorama program, better than Photoshop.

For those interested: links to finding nodal points (NPP, no parallax point) and panoramas !

Hi Magnus,

Yes I adjusted the nodal point as good as possible taking two window corner until they did not move from each other anymore. You can see the position of the nodal point of this 11-24mm lens in 11mm position in the image I posted from the camera. It was 169mm.

I understand. I will try with multiple rows stacked vertically and see what happens.

As far as I know it gets easier the farther away the object is and in this case the Milky Way is as far away as possible.

Hi Magnus,

Today's pano made of 3 vertical rows, -15°, 0°, +15° and 5 Horizontal images and 36° steps in horizontal eg. giving me 15 images in total.

Focal length 24mm and 36° steps in horizontal

Hi Magnus,

The previous Panorama was stitched in Photoshop using spherical stitching and the one below was made in Capture One Pro using also Spherical. Strange that the results came out different

Dear Rainer,

I forgot to inform you, that I think it is easier to use a prime lens e.g. 20mm or 24mm Prime lens for panoromas. Not sure if a zoom lens is harder to get a nodal point (NPP) and do panoramas. But I think you knew that anyway.

Hi Magnus,

IMHO the longer the focal length the less distortion you have. It is a question of making some tests and see what comes out.

So far Photoshop has managed to stitch quite well the 11mm frames to a whole one. See my Observatory inside.

For your Milky way the problem I see is exposure time which equals to star trailing and amount of detail captured in each frame. For Milky Way I agree longer focal length does not make sense unless you have a very sensitive camera and you can shoot quickly around.

Hi Magnus,

I am experimentong at the moment with 70 mm focal length in my garden which is not a big space. At the moment it is working and not yet finished but with the images of yesterday I used a different stitch way and this came out.

I am using Capture One Pro for panorama stitching at the moment and the stitching method is called Panini and looks like below. Looks like an architectural drawing with one vanishing point

Hi Magnus,

That was a great tip. Just tested it with 80 images taken with 70 mm focal length making 4 vertical rows and 20 images for 180°. The vertical movement was -15°,0°,+15°,+30°

The resulting 100% panorama is 34925 x 12459 pixels.

Below the reduced version

Hi Rainer,

Superb panorama. I think this Panoramaker 3 Pro is one of the best. I heard PTGui is very good for Milky way panoramas. May have to choose if you are going to do them regularly.

Have a nice day.

Hi Magnus,

You mentioned now Panoramaker 3 Pro ? and I made a search and that one os from Arcsoft but never succeeded to download it.

The previous was made in PanoramaStudio Pro, The only Nitbit is that Panorama Studio has only one projection type.

Have been playing with PTGui but WOW what a non Intuitive and complicated software and there I ahve not seen an undo arrow. You do somthing and evything gets F...d Up ... Really annoying ...

Tested with my 4x20 matrix and for example trying to get Rectilinear projection it does not show all the image. It cuts away a huge amount from the sides or at least I have not found a way to see the full image in that projection.

Need to practice more and the price is really proud ... at about US $ 180.00

Have you tested PTGui Pro ?

Hi Rainer,

I meant to say PanaramaStudio Pro was what I recommend. I have not used PTGUi as it is too expensive in my opinion.
I have researched manual stitching in Photoshop, this can sometimes be used where these panarama programs fail.
I am not sure why it cut a huge amount from your sides. I would try contacting them for support. I am sure it is something in the program or the settings. It has been some time since I tested it and is usually a very complex imaging/panarama problem.

I am afraid it is a very complex program, and I only managed to learn the bare basics.

Hi Rainer,

No I have not used PTGUi Pro. I just seen on Youtube and elsewhere some professional milky way guys use PTGui Pro (too expensive) !

I did not realise that PanaramaStudio Pro used just rectilinear projection... ? I would recommend going through the manual which is 80 pages long. I will probably come back to PanaramaStudio Pro later in the year when I may have more time and more Milky way images to stitch together...!!

Hi Magnus,

Followed your advice and found that after making a panorama you can go to the menu Panorama and there is Create Projection but honestly for my taste very rudimentary ...
