13th July= COMET NEOWISE before the Sun gets busy again.
Hello Sun-Gazers,
Well I guess the current Comet NEOWISE C/2020 F3 is somewhat connected with our Sun, so before the Sun gains more activity again, perhaps this sight in our skies at present will fill a space and is well worth a look and image too.
From England and beyond, it is now visible between NNW in the evening after 22:00z/23:00BST and
in the early-hours at NNE at around 00:00z/01:00BST. Best seen within about that two-hour period, but that will widen in due course.
Albeit at 23:59/GMT (01:00BST) on the evening of Monday 13th July it will be due-north at 7-degrees above the horizon, so with a clear-horizon view will be visible with the naked-eye and better with binoculars. Remember about "eye adaption" to the darker skies than our Solar-viewing.
The Comet now remains above the horizon from the UK and elsewhere in the northern-hemisphere at least and will be rising over the next days...
Imaging (depending on the camera used), will require a tripod and fairly high ASA settings as my poor-image here, was taken at 800-ASA with an F4 aperture on automatic for 2.5-seconds. Other settings will likely get better images. My camera used was a Panasonic-LUMIX DMC-G2 with its' 45-200mm lens on a Manfrotto mono-pod. I caught this image just before the Comet took a dive into a nearby tree...!!!
For other positional details from any specific location - best consult a planetarium program etc., as it is climbing quite rapidly away from the Sun...
CLEAR SKIES.
Regards

I need to make it out early to see this one. My evening sky in the NNW is marred by trees. I'll certainly be able to catch it as it rises higher.

Re: 13th July= COMET NEOWISE before the Sun gets busy again.
Hello all!
In the morning of July 3, 2020, I managed to photograph comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) from my small homeland (in Yuzhno-Morskoy, near Nakhodka, Russia), over the Sea of Japan. From 04:41 to 04:42 local time (UTC+10), I took 4 photos (with my camera Canon EOS 60D, 100mm lens, on the tripod) of comet in the gaps in the clouds, in the bright sky (the altitude of the comet was about 3.5 degrees, the altitude of the Sun was about -8.5 degrees).
I am attaching one of four photographs with an inset on it (contains the result of stacking of these 4 frames; two out of four photos were taken with a shutter speed of 5 seconds and ISO-320; the third photo - with a shutter speed of 4 seconds and ISO-250; fourth photo - 4 sec. and ISO-400; for all four photos: f/5.6). With the naked eye it was not visible, but this comet is really bright because it is visible in photographs in bright dawn.
Best regards, Filipp Romanov.

Hi DeepSolar64 are you able to walk around those trees for an evening capture and not lose so much sleep ???
Binos will assist too...
Hi Dan, You've certainly captured a beautiful and crystal-sharp image attached here, At 30-secs, what ISO settings was used ??
Hi Filipp, thanks for the detailed analysis of your images taken - which surely must be some of the first taken with an ordinary
DSLR camera etc. and way back ten days ago too.
Thanks all for the replies.

Terry

Re: 13th July= COMET NEOWISE before the Sun gets busy again.
Hello Terry!
Here are my photos of the comet for the date of July 9, 2020.
For almost 11 years of my astronomical observations, I have never seen such an impressive comet. This was visible with the naked eye. I estimated the brightness of the comet's head at +2m, estimated the tail length at 35 arcminutes.
1 photo - the result of stacking 17 images taken with Canon EOS 60D camera on a tripod (shutter speeds of 6 sec., 135 mm, ISO-3200, f/5.6).
2 photo - 47 mm, ISO-2500, exposure time 13 seconds, f/5.
3 photo: 22 mm, ISO-1250, shutter speed 10 seconds, f/4 (on the right side of the photo you can see Venus, Aldebaran, star clusters of Hyades and Pleiades).
4 photo: with the ISS: 79 mm, ISO-500, shutter speed 10 seconds, f/8.

Hello Filipp & Eric- thanks so much for your replies about this fairly rare event of its' kind for a Comet.
Filipp - some well beautiful images and the one with the ISS pass too. In fact I wonder what sort of views are being seen from the ISS itself !!
The data of the camera-settings will be useful for me to get something similar to your images, as there is a possibility of cloud-clearing this evening-morning next, so expecting to drive-out to a local high-ground site for an unobstructed longer view at the darkest-sky times...
CLEAR SKIES
Regards
Terry

That was ISO 800. I did apply some noise reduction with Neat Image.EGRAY-OBSERVATORY wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 12:04 pm

Re: 13th July= COMET NEOWISE before the Sun gets busy again.
Thanks Dan and at least I guessed the ISO rating about right, but still early after Sun-set. Was expecting to go out again tonight in the car this time, but the rain-radar is showing the usual-problem, so perhaps another evening for a couple of hours in a low-horizon view-point.
Thanks also Filipp for those links and although an expected real black background from the ISS, I think i prefer the excellent images being posted on this website. Perhaps if the ISS crew could use a very long telephoto-lens, the detail would be fantastic, but hey they might have other things to do..
Cheers
Hi Stuart, thanks from me for my attempted image and as just mentioned, it may be a cloud/rain times here in S.E.England until around Friday (next)...
Best Wishes for CLEAR SKIES
