Lake James Landing. Camping, Fishing and Solar Astronomy!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

This is my first time posting to Sunlit Earth so here goes.

My stepson, Brian Lyman has a spot on Lake James Landing, a camping community on the upward side of Lake James just outside of Marion NC in the foothills of the Appalachians. Back in my childhood days my family visited and camped on this lake often. In 1977 when I was 14 they started going elsewhere. I have always cherished the memories of my youth on this lake, especially fishing with my dad. So with Brian's presence at Lake James Landing it gives me a really good access point to the lake and a place to stay. Last night, August 1'st Brian and I went out night fishing with his friend Chris who has a pontoon boat. It was the first time I had been on the lake since 1977. 43 years ago. It really brought back memories. We fished until 3am, drank a little beer and enjoyed the peaceful night. The moon flanked by Jupiter and Saturn, Mars trailing behind down the zodiac and with Scorpius to the south, We did'nt catch many fish. 7 in all I think. But I had a good time. Fishing on a pontoon boat is as comfortable as fishing from you couch. Complete with beer holder! Green LED lights are suspended into the water to attract baitfish which then attract the bigger fish, in this case the crappie we are fishing for. We later got to bed at 4am with the fish on ice to be cleaned in the morning. The other thing planned that morning of course is solar observing. I did bring the smaller Coronado and Orion instruments. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I hope to go back there soon!

James

I really enjoyed it. I didn't wanna come home. That grassy area was a really nice place to set the scopes up too!
