December 2 2021 Observations. Calming Sun.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today the Sun shows a bit less activity than it did yesterday. Session time is from 16:17 to 17:05 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with some high thin clouds. The seeing is below average. The temperature is 62F ( 16.6C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 44.5x ( Ha )
I can see a triple plage very near the SW limb which corresponds to the area of the AR12898-AR12900 complex. With difficulty I can only see one spot in the west of the westernmost plage near the limb. I can see a single plage in the SE quadrant. That of AR12903. Almost due north of AR12903 in the NE quad lies the disturbance of AR12901. It takes a close look and an etalon tweak to see. Well west of it in the NW quad lies the much easier plage of AR12902 lying between several easy dark filaments. There is another disturbance to the west of AR12902 against the western side of a nice filament in the NW quadrant. GONG CT shows it easier than I could see it in the scope.

Several prominences are noticed on the limb. The SW limb has one that visually has a tangled appearance. I also noticed another fair one on the NE limb. Staying in double-stack I didn't pay much attention to proms today.

The mottles cover the solar disc and are easy to see. I could not see the spicule layer at the limb at all.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see 4 areas of disturbance at 540nm on the solar photosphere today. The AR12898-AR12900 complex in the SW near the limb shows only a single spot to my scope only showing with difficulty it's penumbra. SDO HMIc shows a dark pore SW of it very near the limb which I failed to see. Faculae are easily seen SE of the spot. The only other detail seen in the southern hemisphere is a patch of faculae near the SE limb. AR12902 shows a decent diagonally NE-SW oriented spot group with 8 visible spots/pores. To it's west the SDO HMI image shows a patch of low contrast faculae. I failed to pick this up visually but I could see three tiny patches close together near the NW limb.

I can see the fine granulation of the photosphere today but not well.

Carpe Lumen!

James
