Brian.
That time of day I often have coffee too, or a cup of nice hot tea! I have been cutting back on beer a bit and tea has been a good replacement. I hardly drink soft drinks, sodas at all. Usually if I do it's Root Beer or Mountain Dew.

You are not the only one not having English as your first language and I'm sure you would be fine.

Hope you will be able to attend next time!

I had to look up who Henry Higgins is  We watch so many American films and TV since a kid I've heard it all :)

Yes, good point, a Zoom meeting with English spoken at hundred miles per hour could be quite off putting to our non English speaking friends. On the next Zoom meeting we must be more mindful of this. If English isn't your first language, please be assured you are very welcome, make yourself known using the chat box. We can then all speak a little slower and keep checking the chat box to make sure you are OK and following the conversation. If you want to ask questions please do so by the chat box. We want to make this as inclusive as possible.
Alexandra

What would everyone say to having a Zoom for whomever wants to attend on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 1400GMT?

We could have:

State of the forum

Current Solar regions of interest

Latest hardware/software

Maybe someone could do a 10 minute presentation on a topic of interest

Free form discussion

any other ideas.

Stephen and all...

I will work with what ever day/time fits the majority, keeping in mind that we cover a wide number of time zones and complications that introduces. I have found the Sunday, 18:00 GMT window worked well int he past as it put the time form early evening in Europe through mid morning on the Pacific coast, but it doesn't need to stay that way.

A suggestion might be to post a poll to as folks what their primary choice of day and time is, and maybe a secondary choice and build around the closest match to those who respond, or offer a few fixed dates/times and choose from there (fewer variable to deal with). Just thinking out loud ;)

There have been several post about those who do not speak English as their primary language, and I 'm sure we can make the best effort to accommodate everyone. Some apologize for their posts, citing the language barrier, but the posted text is nothing to be apologizing for ;) Probably better than my English  If questions and comments can be posted in the chat comments, we can work through that media when it is the better way.

Lets see hat we can do to make it a viable option for as many members as possible.

Brian

Same here at the current time. Once COVID-19 allows me back in church 18:00 UTC may be a bit early though. Saturday at 18:00 UTC would usually work for me as well. Especially once I return to church.

James, I only found out about this on Monday. But in any case, on Sunday we were visiting my mother-in-law and returned late.
My English is very weak and without an interpreter I can hardly understand the spoken language, but in any case I will gladly join the meeting. I can write something in the chat and see everyone.

the 2nd Saturday of each month at 14:00 GMT is great if it suits everyone. If not, then I'm ready for any other time.

Ivan,
I often don't talk a lot either. Most here know more on imaging and the technology of solar observing than I do. I listen and learn. I probably talked more on this last meeting than any of the previous ones.

I know on Google Meets you can actually set it so it actually shows printed what everyone is saying. You gotta wonder if there is a virtual meeting program that also does that but also interprets to your language.

Like others have said, it was good to be able to put names to a faces with the zoom photo posted.

That sounds like the same thing, only don’t know if there is any translation function, but since Zoom is universal it would be interesting to test it out with various people to see what the function looks like. The one I participated in on Google Meet was in English and did an accurate job of providing a transcript as people were talking.

So I did a bit of Googling, and it turns out Zoom doesn’t actually translate the meeting, you can add translators to the meetings, but there is software called Lingmo that can do this but it is $27/month per participant.

Zoom works fine for me. My computer lacks a microphone so I use it on my iPhone.

Thanks Warren. It is a pity that there is no free version with a translator.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but can you read English or is your computer translating what we write on this forum? And does it translate what you write back to us??

Warren, there are some things I can read and understand, but mostly I use a translator.

I studied French for 9 years at school, I studied English for 1 year in courses after graduation. But without regular practice, all knowledge disappears. Thanks to communication in Solarchat, I begin to remember something and memorize new things. Thank you all so much for this!

As a non-native speaker (I am Vietnamese). Vietnamese's education system emphasis on reading/writing skill (at least that's what I've been taught back in the day. Obviously I was not a very good English student which shows in my bad grammar) I had not heard a native English speaker until I was already a grown man so speaking and listening is definitely my weak side. So to me, reading English is easy (especially conversational English with a familiar context), writing is harder, listening and speaking is a whole other story. I do not have the luxury of speaking/listening English on my everyday life. Online forums like Solarchat is my only source of exposure to English. That is why I am excited to these meeting. Can gives me a chance to pratice my listening/speaking skills.

Ivan and Minh,
Both of you do well here not to be native English speakers. I certainly don’t have any trouble communicating with you.

Warren, I think Google Translate would save you the way it saves me. The main difficulty is live communication.

It's a challenge to make communication seamless, but we can do our best to accommodate those that have trouble with the conversations.
