First post and couples of images taken with 8" Hat in St Veran (France)
Hello,
This is my first post here so I guess it would be better to introduce myself a bit before posting any image My name is Simon, I live in Switzerland and amateur astronomer for...well...quite a long time now Up to a couple of years I wasn't specially focused on solar observation, just from time to time, my interest for it really started with the solar observation in H-alpha through the increasing number of solar instruments (essentially Lunt and Coronado refractors) owned by friends. I really jumped in solar activity by acquiring 2 years ago a 8" HaT (EdgeHD SC with ERF-treated front aspheric plate) and a second-hand daystar Quantum PE0.6.
Recently I went to the Hautes Alpes (Southern part of French Alps last week), in the St Véran observatory (3k meters of altitude) for a week, to image essentially the sun (see also the posts from Christian Viladrich and Fred Jabet) and also do a bit of planetary observations. The weather wasn't always optimal, but we could get descent seeing (sometimes better than 0.3 arc sec, as measured by our multiple SSM devices).
So here are the good ones I could get through the 8" HaT, with a basler 1920-155.
AR2674, when emerging, in H-alpha:
Then in white light (HaT with a OIII filter):
The next day, in WL:
And two days later (friday), in WL:
And in Ha:
Finally, the nice arch that was visible at the beginning of last week:
Remark about the white light images: there is a 1-2% leak in the whole visible spectrum, outside of the red area, that is equivalent to a ~1.7 O.D. neutral filter, which is what I exploit, restricting to the green area (optimal wav for these SC's, usually) with a OIII filter. This allows quite short exposures, around 0.5ms, typically.
Best,
Simon

Hi Simon. Fantastic work especially for an 8". I love your WL image. Have you used a OIII ?(480-530nm) Did you use it with ERF filter? (600-720nm)

Thanks for your kind comments! :-)
Ale: Yes I used a 12nm OIII (Astronomik) filter. Btw I also tested a Lumicon OIII filter but for some reasons it didn't work, the amount of light being too large with that one (I suspect some UV and/or IR leak). And yes, the HaT scope has its front aspheric plate ERF-treated. See the following images of one of the HaT batch:

Simon, what wavelength has ERF coating of your HaT 8". I don't understand how you are able to shot using a OIII filter that has a wavelength between 480-520nm and the ERF that should have a wavelength between 600-720 and >1300nm (this is true if ERF Airylab wavelength is the same of Baader DERF)
Tks

Re: First post and couples of images taken with 8" Hat in St Veran (France)
Ciao Ale,
Have a look at the last slide in http://airylab.fr/contenu/HAT/fiche%20HRST%20EN.pdf, that's representative of the HaT ERF transmission curve. There is signal even below 500nm, which allows the setup to work like a Hershel helioscope in terms of flux. The good thing is that the EdgeHD are apparently optimized in green, so from that point of view the use of a green filter is very well adapted,
I profit of this discussion to raise a point: I'm currently trying to find a low O.D. film (like an astrosolar, not a glass filter) to be adapted on a mewlon 250, so that it can work in while light like a HaT. The optical density I'm looking for should be around 2 (1% transmission), so that the exposure time at F/D~40 and the use of a green (or even blue) filter would allow exposure times below 1ms with the basler. I contacted already Thousand Oaks Optical, but apparently they do not provide such filter. I'll also try with Baader, in case. If anybody has an idea on where this can be found, thanks for letting me know.

Wonderful shots. Looks like the Hat is a winner.

Welcome to the forum Simon! You had excellent seeing in Alps, I can't get close to that level with my HaT here in England.
