First Sun of The New Year - 7th January

Post by marktownley »

High pressure resides over the UK, and with it some clear skies, so this morning I decided to get my 20 minute gap and have a go at taking a picture of old yellow face. The sun briefly passes in a gap between 2 buildings so really was a case of getting set up ready, doing a quick eyeball to check things were on band and then swapping the camera in and shooting some files. Image below is fairly typical of the 'shimmering' live view - welcome to my world of poor seeing!

Fortunately AS3 does miracles, so the stacked image is slightly better...

No photoshop at the moment, so this is straight out of ImPPG.

My first views of 2018 - less than ideal but better than a poke in the eye :D

Mark

Great first light of the new year Mark!!!

Great how the image processing can accomplish a lot even when he capture conditions are less than ideal. Your seeing looks a lot like mine these days too

Good to see you managed some time on the Sun this morning, Mark. So challenging for you having to 'thread the needle' to get a view. Similar for me at the moment, what with neighbouring trees and roofs. At least you managed a decent FD.

My 60mm DS Lunt just wouldn't perform today. Very little contrast and focusing was a nightmare. I didn't even pull the trigger, things were so bad, despite the blue. Anyhow, we're on the right side of Christmas for the days to lengthen. Roll-on spring.

Funny how we all had atrocious conditions yesterday, obviously the weather was not good for solar despite the blue. You did well to get such a good stack, some of mine failed and I didn't even have clouds, so the shimmering must have been exceptional, well done!

I also get similar seeing conditions sometimes. Usually in improves if you have the patience (and the sky) to wait

AS3 is great, I agree

Conditions were poor but the final image is pretty good despite the challenges. I am still on a duck for 2018. Hope things improve for you mark.
