Sunday Sunshine - 4th February

Post by marktownley »

The clouds parted (well there were gaps) and old yellow face appeared in and out in a dancing and teasing fashion. The good news is he's now pretty much cleared the trees so weather permitting for me the 2018 solar season has begun, on, an albeit at the moment weekend basis. Still need to iron out the tuning on the DS50 and a blocking filter reflection to sort out, but, for the moment that's just tweaking some mechanics when the sun is out for long enough to do so.

Till then, first sun in a month, DS50 and PGR Ch3, bit of barlow to get a full frame.

Next weekend off to Anglesey, if weather looks promising a full solar armoury will be taken. If its cloudy i'm going to the pub.

Mark

Thanks Mark

I see the Lunt 50mm scope has a etalon inside and for double stacking you add on the fronmt anotjer etalon. I see you have the hotspot decentered.

¿ have you tried rotating the front etalon in order to center more the hotspot and so have a more even sun surface ?

I did that with my 2 Coronados and for fixing the position i put some rounds of electrical tape around them. Now they have an offset of 90°

Hi Rainer,

Yes, there is an off centre hot spot. I've only had the scope since the start of winter, and this is the 3rd or 4th time i've been able to use it so any views have been fleeting with no time for experimenting with the low sun catching gaps in between the trees and buildings. Hopefully as the year progresses and the sun gets higher it will allow me to experimenting more. Clocking the external etalon is on my list, was something I did with my Coronado DS40. I also have a ghost which is blocker / barlow related that needs dealing with too. My other thought is that off centre hot spots are a result of collimating and or refocusing lenses not sat orthogonal to the optical axis. Other than changing the focuser and running with a coronado blocker i've actually done nothing in the way of tweaks or mods to the scope, which, is very unusual for me! I have no doubt that I will :D
