Some Sun From The Last Couple of Days

Post by marktownley »

Hi All,

Summer came briefly here in the UK (and went again!), however last week was late nights at work and not able to image as I would in the early evening. However friday was able to get off a bit earlier and squeeze in a bit of imaging before heading off on the boat for the weekend. Seeing was ropey at 5pm but got some shots in; first off the full disk with the 40mm f10 scope somewhere around f13.

Then upping the scopes, the ED80 but stopped down to 60mm at 600mm focal length.

Then some Ha full disks, which i'm not happy with, but more on that later: First off the single stacked lunt50:

Then the double stack version:

However my favourite shot was the active region with the ED80 and double stacked Quark:

I have a few more possibly, need to double check my files. Anyway, head off on the boat for a couple of days and fast forward to sunday afternoon and some fleeting gaps in the clouds. Remember I said I wasn't happy with my disks from the lunt 50 - lots of glow and soft images; well visually with a wide field or low power eyepiece it is quite easy to see a bright offset circle of glow overlapping the field of view. A reflection; so I set about to find it and hopefully deal with it. I'm using a Coronado BF15 blocker instead of the Luntb600 as this has a shorter optical path and stops the complications with imaging with the native Lunt setup. Well said reflection was from the back of the ITF filter on the blocker and somewhere on the innards on the scope, this was confirmed by removing the ITF and also rotating the blocker. I tried a circular polariser on the nose of the blocker and hey presto a black sky background and more contrast on the disk albeit at the expense of image brightness. It also did away with uneven brightness across the disk which was annoying me! The result is much better I think.

Needless to say the clouds have now returned. Hope you like them.

Mark

A very nice series of images, Mark. Thanks for sharing.

Also a good tips about the using a circular polarized with BF filter.

Hi Mark,

They are all great images. The one on AR12706from the double quark is especially beautiful
