April 23rd Session
Hi All...
The late winter/early spring weather here has limited my ability to do much solar work...a week ago we were digging out from a storm that dumped 30cm of snow on us and freezing rain that took out power far large parts for Ontario for a day or two. Now, sun and temps in the high teens has the snow gone...welcome to my world
I was able to get a good look at AR2706 at NEAF and was hoping it would hold on until I got home to clear skies. Monday was crystal clear and we still had moderate seeing by the time I got home for lunch. I spent an hour so so imaging, mostly in Ha but I did dig out the WL and CaK wedges as well.
The first image is the full sun in Ha through the LS80T/B1800Ha solar scope, double stacked with the LS75FHa...a composite of separate disk and limb exposures: I set up the modified Celestron CR150 (150mm, f8) OTA fitted with the Lunt DSII module/B1800Ha with an internal Baader 110mm ERF, and took a series of videos of AR2706 and the proms that were scattered around the limb. A 3x barlow was placed ahead of the camera to get the following images...the first a 2 frame mosaic of the area around AR2706, presented in 3 palettes. Unfortunately the seeing didn't treat each equally: It was nice to see a relatively complex AR on the disk again. Although the proms were small, they did have a lot of detail and the seeing was good enough to allow me to capture them: To finish the session off I grabbed full disk images in WL and CaK through the iStar 150mm, f8 OTA. The WL image was taken through a Lunt solar wedge/Baader continuum filter, and the CaK used a Lunt B1800CaK wedge with a Baader CaK filter in the camera nosepiece: It looks like I'm clouded out until the weekend...hope AR2706 has some company waiting to come around the limb!
Questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Re: April 23rd Session
Hi Brian,
Very nice FD with proms in DS!! And lovely close-up with 150mm mod with DSII!!
I wonder why for DS with LS80THa you use LS75 etalon instead of DSII? And for 150mm mod is DSII but not LS75?
Thank you.
Val

What an excellent set of images Brian, our weather has been up and down too similar to yours, although the forecast seems to be back to cloud again now for the foreseeable...

I would say Brian best session for a while. That mosaic came up well despite the unevenness. The weather its erratic here too I need a week of fine warm weather to finish up the season which has been OK.

Val, Mark, Stu, Derek, Franco, and Valery...
Thanks to each of you for your comments and feedback...always appreciated
Val, I have my DSII module installed on the Celestron refractor as a mod, but use it instead of a PST style mod. I have had a the LS75 etalon for years and find it works well to DS the 80mm scope without having to dissemble and re-mount the DSII module each time I want to set it up. Hope I have explained the setup...let me know if you have any questions,
Brian

Thank you for explanation of your 150mm mode with DSII and DS combination with LS80. It is clear.
I like both setups!!

Re: April 23rd Session
Beautiful! You managed to do what I find the most difficult part of processing: achieve enough contrast and still have a lot of detail in the umbra.

Re: April 23rd Session
Thanks Bart...
The seeing needs to be good to keep the fine details sharp. I find the umbra is always tough...challenge of seeing and different brightness/contrast around the core makes it hard to show well.
