Herschel wedge option
Hello,
I am contemplating on getting a Herschel wedge in 1.25" for some solar white light duties, I've come across this from TS:
https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/pr ... ilter.html
It has a heat trap (logically) It comes with a polarizer and a 40nm continuum filter (not Baader, which is about 10nm) and its eyepiece side has a T2 male thread for photography.
Has anyone tried this before? what do you guys think of it? do I still need a ND3 filter although in the description TS mentions it has all the filters you need. compared to the Lunt wedge it's a bit cheaper plus I get the bonus of the 2 filters that come with it. It's going to be for both visual and photography naturally.

Not tried it, but looks ok to me. TS stuff is normally good.

Thanks Mark, Do you think I need anything else other than the 40nm continuum and the polarizer? (ND3 filter for example or not necessary)
I'll be using it on a 152mm refractor.

Contact TS and ask them if it works OK with a 152mm refractor.
The following is included with the Herschel Prism
In English♦ TS 1,25"-Sonnenprisma
♦ 1,25"-Polarisationsfilter
♦ 1,25"-Schmalband-Interferenzfilter
♦ Schutzkappen für beide Seiten
1.25" Sunprisma
1.25" Polarizing filter
1.25" Narrowband Interferencefilter
Caps for front and back
and they write that nothing else is necessary

Re: Herschel wedge option
Alright so I contacted Teleskop-express and asked them about that Herschel Wedge and they told me it's safe to use with up to 8" refractors Maximum. Of course I have my concerns since I read that 1.25" Herschel Prisms are safe to use up to 4-5" refractor maximum and 6" and up require a 2" Herschel prism, but of course it might depend on the brand I guess?
Just to be on the safe side, anyone using 1.25" Herschel wedges with 150mm or 6" refractors? if so for how long or the period doesn't matter?
Thanks a lot

I use this one with a 150mm f8 refractor. Works perfectly!

Does not seem to be affected by how long you use it.

Re: Herschel wedge option
Great, Thanks Bart. Can you see the whole disk of sun with it?
does it get hot after long use?
I hear the Lacerta is one of the best Hershel prisms with its brewster angle feature. I intend to do some photography too.
Do you use a Baader Continuum or a polarizer with the ND3 filter?

Re: Herschel wedge option
Heat is no problem, just used it to image, but with the right eyepiece you should be able to see the whole disk I think.
I use the ND3.0 filter, a Baader SC and a UV/IR block filter. Just search the forum with the term Lacerta and you will find quite a lot of examples.

Re: Herschel wedge option
Would using a Baader film in front of the objective plus a Solar Continuum be equal visually and photographically to using a Herschel wedge with an SC filter? if so I can save some expenses...

Re: Herschel wedge option
Hi StarCitizen,
You would need two different Baader Films. ND5.0 for visual and ND3.8 for imaging. I find it difficult to say if the results for Baader Film and the wedge are the same. To me it seems the Herschel Wedge works better. But maybe there are other opinions on this forum.
Bart.

Re: Herschel wedge option
Herschel wedges are much better for imaging and safe for solar observing as well
