Odds and ends from July 8

Post by gabrieli »

Conditions were terrible today but with a few interesting features.
All the images were taken with a Lunt 152 with a Blackfly S (1.6Mp).

The first image was the best of the bunch.

In an earlier post, Valery suggested this area could be the debut of a new sunspot.

In other news,

A new laptop arrived with a superfast SSD (PCIe, NVMe) and quad processor and a second spinner HDD which I replaced with a standard 2.5" SATA SSD. I cloned my startup disk onto this second SSD just in case and I can also use it for storage.
I've set up the faster system disk with minimal software.

This should reduce a problem I've had recording at highest frame rate(75 fr/s) at full resolution with my Blackfly S (5 Mp).
In my other laptop the Spinnaker (Flyview) buffer would fill up faster than the SSD could write and quit recording after about 700 frames. I don't have this problem with the Blackfly S (1.6Mp)

As I've become used to the Spinnaker software, I found some useful features (although having to navigate to different windows to access some featureas is still annoying). One of these is the abilty to choose video depths of 8 bits, 10 bits,
12 bits, and 16 bits. 12 bits is what I tend to use most of the time.

I won't use the C9.25 solar configuration until a 0.8X reducer arrives. This reducer mounts between the camera and snout.
By using a spacer between the camera and reducer,I hope to reduce the reduction factor to 0.7X for an efl of about 4800 mm.

I'm looking forward to seeing better images than mine of the proms from this day.

Hi Lou...

A good set of images with the poor seeing, but they still came up well.

I found times of good seeing to poor seeing today...somewhere around 10-11am seemed to be my best. I would expect that the 'urban' landscape is causing you a lot of localized seeing effects (roofs, pavement, etc). I'm glad to have a green landscape around the landscape again. Corn intercepts pretty much 100% of the light and has a low evapotranspiration rate...not as good as overlooking water or coniferous forest but I always like it when my neighbors plant a lot of corn ;)

The conditions must have been good to get proms with detail like that at such a high mag :bow I couldn't get focus at 1.6x on a 100mm.
