I use the histogram to set the exposure for the disc and have it just about 5/8 its usually set at 20 ms with a touch of gain to keep the frame rate up arround 58 on the desktop pc.
For the proms i increase the gain so the disc is just gone past overexposed and layer them in in PS.
it all habit and I am sure there are many other ways of doing it.
