Greetings Everyone.
I've decided to make the "bold" move of posting some spectroheliograms here in this forum rather than the spectroscopy forum! Although the instrument I use to generate these images is spectrograph-based, the final results are images of the solar disk in the light of various Fraunhofer lines, just like the many CaK and H alpha images generally posted here. One feature of spectroheliograms is their extraordinary sensitivity to bad seeing and wind gusts ... both of which I experienced during this imaging session! Under the right conditions, though, the image quality can be quite good.
Here are three spectroheliograms taken on July 15 showing the nature of the solar chromosphere in the familiar hydrogen (H alpha) and calcium (Ca K3) lines as well as a more unusual view in helium (He D3) light. It was a happy surprise to find some He absorption associated with the (weak) AR. (The orientation of the images is wrong and should, properly, be left-right inverted.) All three wavelengths reveal fairly bright prominences and the images include versions with the prominences enhanced. The exposure levels of the disk and limb were too different to capture everything adequately in one image so I blended intensity enhanced limb layers with disk layers in Photoshop (using the "Exclusion" blending mode - hence the inverted disk). A noteworthy aspect of the HeD3 image is that there is significant limb-brightening already visible in the disk image (without enhancement). This is a real feature of imaging in HeD3!
Cheers, Peter.

Peter:
Very interesting, met Fred Veio many years ago with his SHS´s, I still keep his book.
I had the intention of making one, but never started. :-((
Very nice shots,
Best regards,
Eric.

I do enjoy these, it is great how the plage in Helium is dark compared to white in Calcium
