Hi all,
I had a few days holiday in London this week and spent some time at the Science Museum, which is hosting the 'Living with Our Star' exhibition through until 6th May 2019.
Fascinating stuff with lots of information about the Sun and its impact on our daily lives, now and throughout history. From a solar geek viewpoint there's plenty to see; from drawings of Sunspots in Galileo's notebooks, the first dedicated solar telescope at the Kew Observatory (1857 solarheliograph), the first spectroscope (Norman Locker's seven prism device 1868 with which he discovered Helium) and Carrington's original notebooks in which he recorded 'The Carrington Event' in 1859, together with geomagnetic data from the same event recorded at the Kew Observatory, through to state of the art hi-res video from SDO.
If you get the opportunity, it's well worth the visit. Check out the 'Living with Our Star' website https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/see-an ... h-our-star
Some photo's from the exhibition:
Some of Galileo's sunspot records.
Sunspot sketches, prints, paintings and photographs from mid-1800's to mid 1900's
Kew Observatory's Photoheliograph (1857)
Richard Carrington's Sketchbook and Notebook (1859) together with Kew's magnetometer record.
Norman Lockyer's Spectroscope with which he discovered Helium.
Stu.

That looks fun Stu! We've popped down to see Janet and John on the IoW for a few days, Johns just getting his hair cut then I think we will be playing in the obs for a bit.

Wow! some priceless objects there, to see the real sketchbooks and notes of the great solar observers is quite something, usually they are locked away somewhere.
