Jan 1st Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

It looks like New Years day was a popular day for everyone to do some solar imaging, and I had a lucky break in the weather and was able to get out as well. The day started out completely overcast and I had given up much hope of the 'mix of sun and cloud' that was forecast. Late in the morning it started to brighten a bit outside and eventually the sun began to peek through some hole sin the cloud deck. I hoped the strong NW wind would move the clouds out and by 11:30 am it looked like a safe bet to head to the observatory. Thankfully the dome blocked the strong wind as the -5C air temp felt a lot colder in the wind ;) The occasional low cloud drifted through but the biggest obstacle was the poor seeing.

I used a variety of scope and filters, some with more luck than others. I started with the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1200Ha double stack solar scope to get the full disk Ha images. Below is a composite of separate disk and limb images, with a fairly long exposure required to pull up the faint prom on the SW limb:

I switched to the CR150/DSII/B1800Ha modded scope to grab some higher resolution images with a 3x tele-extender ahead of the ASI174MM camera. This worked fairly well despite the seeing, but I must have been asleep with some of the setting since the original captures had very low contrast despite looking decent at capture. The first image is a 3 frame mosaic of the area around AR2732 and the un-named region to its SE that has been around for many days:

The next three images show AR2732 in the red and blue wings with the center band in the middle of the sequence. This is a case where I messed up the flats at capture, but the variation in structure still stands out:

Before finishing the session I set the Stellarvue 110 up for WL and CaK imaging, the image below is through the Lunt solar wedge/Baader Continuum filter set:

The next is the CaK through the modified Lunt Solar wedge/B1800CaK/Baader K-line set:

These last two were hard to focus...between the seeing and the fact I had to focus manually (in a difficult contortion to reach the focus and still see the screen ;) )

Today (Jan 2) looked promising this morning, but cloud rolled in by 9am putting an end to trying to image again.

Questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Happy New Year! Brian :) I think the clouds parted for most people on 1st Jan which is weird. We are back to grey cloud again after that brief encounter with the Sun. Looks like you had a good long imaging run, the little active region is very interesting. It would be good to overlay your red and blue wing in colours to see the movement of the arch filaments :bow

Hi Brian: overall a good session even with the difficult seeing. You were able to capture substantial detail of the new AR, a very good start of 2019.

My thanks to everyone who posted comments and feedback on the session...always appreciated :bow

It was great see so many out on New Years Day...there seems to have been a lot of poor observing weather in the past month for many and fitting that many had a clear break to kick off the year ;)
