Lunt Stopping Making CaK Modules?

Post by marktownley »

I heard yesterday from a fellow astronomer that Lunt are stopping manufaturing their Calcium modules - anybody heard / know anything about this? He was told this by a UK retailer, and once all stock was gone that was it...

Wow! that sounds silly, CaK is just as popular as H alpha. Maybe it is temporary while we are in solar minimum?

Hi all...

I have just checked the Lunt website and the CaK lineup is still there and accepting orders. I have sent an email to them to confirm and will advise what their answer is.

Hope not, love my Ca-K module. Probably my best astro purchase ever.

Ugh, this is bad. It means they will go the way of the unicorn too. It's already a niche market within a niche market, Cak. Annoying. And then, if true, the prices will sky rocket. I guess I'll get a Lunt module this year just in case.

Very best,

All...

When I looked online this morning I was surprised to see that there were several different CaK blocking filters in stock...typically they are on a waiting list.

I'll post the answer on their plans once I hear back.

Production cost and demand realities are what they are.

But I don't think CaK will become a unicorn, dino-dodo, etc. It seems DayStar has (and perhaps SolarSpectrum as a custom order) and will likely keep the CaK option available in the mica based etalons.

I’m glad I received my lunt CaK 1800 a few months ago

Brian, thanks for messaging them. Anxiously awaiting word. I had planned on getting a CaK module possibly next year but this may accelerate my plans a bit. Plan early, plan twice I suppose.

Hi everyone...

Good news on the CaK front at Lunt. Brian Stephens at Lunt answered my email and says that there are no plans to cease making the CaK blocking filters. They do have an issue with the LS152 CaK module which they have stopped production on short term in order to make a fix, but it will be re-introduced later in the year. This issue is not affecting any of the other CaK units, just the LS152 system.

I suppose that the halt on the 152's could have been mistaken as being the entire CaK lineup, but it sounds like the future of CaK is still alive at Lunt.

Brian: I have a LS152 CaK module and it is great performer. Do you know what was the issue for stopping production?

Pedro...

No details were provided, just that the CaK unit specially for the LS152 needed to be tweaked and they were not building any until they sorted it out. I had them assemble a modified version for my 150mm iStar refractor using the CaK wedge and the B1800CaK filter that I already had...works nicely.
