Proms Feb 6,7,12 + Question

Post by Astrophil »

Below are some early test images taken while experimenting with the possibility of double stacking a PST etalon with a Solar Spectrum SO1.5 0.3A. Much work is still to be done but looks promising. The last image is from a small Questar stopped down to 85mm and a Quark Combo.

Question
I am curious as the the type of processing and the general appearance of solar images that is most appealing to the members here. I’m sure this has been discussed ad nauseam but what are the current opinions? Is it better to aggressively sharpen and wring out as much detail a possible or to smooth and soften features to simulate flowing gasses? Does color really add to the image or just please the senses? To invert or not, or maybe just partially invert. High contrast or low, I don’t know.

The Sun is unique and unlike any other subject to photograph. It’s not a landscape or portrait or even a birthday party so what should it look like?

Phil

(thanks Bob)

Number 3 would be my favourite there.

Hi Phil,
I am a member of the "soft school". So, like Mark, would choose number 3. Beautiful pictures btw. CS, Bart.

The Sun should look like what your eyes see down the eyepiece :) remember the Sun is a big ball of flowing plasma, so no sharp edges.

These pics are great!

Phil: I also tend to like softer processing but these images are all beautiful.

Thank you for sharing your preferences. Most helpful. I guess my old eyes tend to push the sharpness further than needed. Might be time for some new glasses.
