Latest GONG Images

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi all...

I was just on the GONG site and see that there is a bright bit of activity quite high in the northern disk near the central meridian...appears in both the Learmonth and Mauna Loa images. Is this associated with cycle 25 ?

There's a good chance with high latitude activity like that. Just need the magnetic data to update so can see polarities...

It looks reversed to me, it is actually the same way round as the southern hemisphere polarity. Looks like a cycle 25, well spotted Brian.

In the images, which is the pos and neg pole...the bright foot print or the dark?

I shared the image above to Scott William McIntosh and asked him 'signs of cycle 25?'

His reply; 'Possibly - I anticipate that by the end of the year we’ll have a few longitudes where it’ll be clear! Need the terminator to happen (early 2020) and we’ll talk about the 9.5 year long cycle 24....'

Brian
Black denotes a negative polarity (magnetic field pointing into the Sun) (south polarity) while white denotes a positive polarity (magnetic field pointing out of the Sun) (north). Large concentrations of both polarities are found near active regions and sunspots.

Derek and Alexandra...

Thanks for your comments and information about the specifics on the polarity of the new and waning cycles.
