March 6th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi all...

A sunny, clear, cold morning here yesterday (Wednesday) and I had time to image...major bonus with the newly arrived activity that had formed !!! AR2734 was very bright visually and only a few small proms were visible in Ha and the WL views showed multiple mall cores.

The first image is from the LS80T/DSII/B1200Ha solar scope with the PGR Grasshopper Express camera (ICX674 chip):

The Stellarvue 110, f7 was setup to capture WL and CaK images of the full disk. The WL image was taken through a Lunt solar wedge/Baader Continuum filter set and the CaK used a Lunt CaK wedge/B1800CaK/Baader K-Line filter set each with the ASI174MM camera:

I added a 3x tele-extender ahead of the camera for a higher res image of AR2734 and a the bright area to its south:

The final images were taken with the ZWO camera with the modded CR-150/DSII/B1800Ha/3x Tele-extender. The AR and region to its south were a treat to image after a long break in activity:

Brian, Nice set of images. It's great to see something in WL again.

The close ups are really nice Brian, as you say it is a real treat to see an AR with many pores at this time :hamster: :bow

Good to see you getting some sun Brian, and nice images too. How do you find that 110mm Stellarvue for CaK imaging compared to your other refractors, I was looking at possibly getting one but had never seen how it performed at the shorter wavelengths. Be interested to know your experiences with this scope?

Hi Mark...

Thanks for your comments on the images.

Overall, I find the SV110 works pretty well in all wavelengths though I have not used it a lot. For CaK it might be worth trying aperture masks to increase the effective focal ratio to see it makes any improvement. It was initially intended as a wide field deep sky scope and even that use has been very limited (work schedules in recent years have zapped my energy to be out late and other equipment issues have put deep sky on the back burner). There is no motorized focuser on this scope either which makes a bit of a challenge trying to reach the focus knob and being able to see the monitor that is shaded form the glare...left arm needs to be about a foot longer

I have used it this winter to get close to FD WL/CaK images with the ASI174MM, but the resolution isn't great with the short focal length and relatively large pixels. I prefer to use the iStar 150mm OTA with the ASI1600MM but this camera is not working properly so I haven't made use of it. Need to see the ZWO rep at NEAF next month to sort out the problem.
