Today's Big Prom! HA | March 12th 2019
Heya,
There's a pretty big prom on the limb again, nice to have a large subject for a change. Not much else going on, the AR dissolved and there's no spots and only a wee filament or two to look at. But, there's always something to see in HA.

I didn't use the PST etalon in this setup with the C8 this time (I do sometimes), but I imaged the full disc with the PST, so I'll show every configuration I have a picture of to help sort it out.
Q1;A1
Here's the basic configuration. Items from left to right are: ASI174MM -> Blue Fireball 2" 0.5" Spacer (12mm) -> 2" GSO 0.5x Focal Reducer -> Quark Chromosphere -> 2" 35mm Extension with a Baader 2" UV/IR Block Filter on the nose -> Crayford Focuser -> C8 Edge HD -> Aires 200mm Tri-band D-ERF
Simple imaging train up close:
Here's the same train, with the Edge 0.7x focal reducer if needed:
Here's if I want to insert the PST etalon with the adapters (adapters from Swiss AOK) (collimating lenses removed from etalon) and use the Edge 0.7x reducer as well as the 0.5x focal reducer together in one big train:
From left to right: ASI174MM -> 2" 0.5" extension (12mm) -> GSO 2" 0.5x focal reducer -> PST Rear Adapter -> PST Etalon -> PST front adapter -> Quark with 2" eyepiece holder -> 2" 35mm Extension with 2" Baader UV/IR Block filter -> Crayford Focuser -> Edge 0.7x Focal Reducer -> C8 Edge HD -> Aires 200mm Tri-band D-ERF
Q2;A2
I put a 2" 0.5x (12mm) spacer between the ASI174MM and the GSO 2" 0.5x focal reducer. In this configuration, it's not a true 0.5x reduction as this causes vignetting and it has to be placed farther from the sensor to truly achieve 0.5x reduction. However, it reduces it enough to increase the FOV and speed up the imaging focal-ratio and reduce imaging scale enough (my Quark puts my system to F42 immediately, from there I drop it with the 0.5x focal reducer, or a combination of the Edge 0.7x focal reducer and a 0.5x focal reducer as needed depending on what I'm doing). The 2" 35mm extension you see inserted into the crayford focuser is only there to hold a Baader 2" UV/IR block filter as 2nd ERF. A shorter extension could be used no problem.
Q3;A3
I use a basic GSO 2" 0.5x Focal Reducer, I have both the 1.25" and 2" versions. They're fine. I just change which I use based on trying to eliminate as much vignetting as I can.
Q4;A4
I do! I use a standard Baader 2" UV/IR block filter. It's on the nose of the 2" 35mm extension that is inserted into the crayford focuser directly, it's sole purpose is to hold that filter. This is the 2nd ERF to further cut down any heat. You could use a Baader HA 35nm filter in its place for even better heat reduction. Or if doing another wavelength, switch to a Baader 2" Blue CCD filter (for CaK as 2nd ERF).

And lastly, here's the D-ERF itself and the cell holder was fabricated to its specification by Teleskop Service (out of Germany). They do a perfect custom job for a reasonable price. The cell holder is felt lined so the D-ERF only touches soft surfaces. The filter is placed in a machined holding cell and a retaining threaded ring then threads down to secure it in place, just like standard filters. All surfaces touching the filter and the telescope are felt lined. Very satisfied with how they machined this, top notch quality.

I'm considering contacting them to see if they can make me an additional adapter to add to my current filter cell so that it could be used on a 6 inch aperture too, to be universally useful and secure. Not sure how to implement. But something that contacts the cell so that the front of the OTA isn't touching the filter in the 8 inch cell. A contact plate basically, with longer nylon screws maybe. I don't think the diameter of the 152 fracs dew shield will be much behind that of the 8" scope. Longer screws would work, you could even drill and tap three holes on the dew shield on the frac so the nylon bolts screw securely into place.

Good point. I don't use my dew shield other than to store the scope. I worry the dew shield wouldn't hold a 4.5lb weight like that D-ERF on the tip like that. But, it's an idea to check things out! Or maybe an adapter that fits like the dew shield.... hrm...

The inside diameter is according my dewshield 204 mm.
The filtercell is heavy and with the D-ERF inside it has some weight in the scale ... hence the 3 plastic safety screws.
All they need is the exact measured diameter from the D-ERF and the outside diameter from the dewshield.
