Clearer Skies on the East of England 19th April

Post by marktownley »

We're currently under a predominantly easterly airflow here in the UK, the opposite of the usual west to east airflows we get. For the last week i've been on the West coast of Wales. Today, and 5 hours later we arrived on the east coast. 15 minutes earlier the sunset and sunrise than what we've been having... It was an interesting journey, in the west the skies were a dense yellowy milky haze looking up through the Welsh valleys, whereas here on the east coast skies were a much deeper blue. Still hazy but considerably less than the other side of the country. Quite surprising how all the durge gets blown over...

Starting off in CaK, and with the Ed60 stopped down to 40mm, homebrew CaK filter, 2x cemax barlow and FLIR GH3 ICX814 camera...

The suns disk as a whole is pretty blank but today there was a feathery edge of prominences so I went for a single 50mm etalon, same scope and imaging train as above. Be sure to click in on this as there's lots going on with the spicule ring...

Double stacking with the Quark gave a closer view of the activity towards the limb...

Hoping I can squeeze some more sun these next couple of days...

Mark

A very nice set, Mark. The Ha close-up shows well the edge and active areas. Glad you are having few consecutive days with the sun: must be pretty unusual in the UK :)

Nice set there, Mark. Your travelling kit is giving you some very decent results. The skies are quite milky here in Redditch. Glad to hear you’re getting good conditions in the east.

The Cak full disc is really spectacular at full size :bow and the double stacking is really the business. We are having fabulous weather in the Cheshire this weekend, just had our 3rd day of clear blue skies and the seeing today (as I thought) was tip top :)
