AR2740 on May 4th

Post by ffellah »

Hello everybody: weather was cloudy all morning but the sun peaked out around 3:00PM for a short while. I was able to capture little data with the 6" refractor and sodium filter, some of it through clouds. One image only came out OK, and here it is.

All of next week is supposed to be cloudy and rainy, so I could not miss the opportunity. Hope you had better weather than me...

Clear skies to all !

Franco

WOW Franco so many details with the sodium Quark, VERY nice.
Is it possible to use the Quark sodium filter with a D ERF front filter?

Thank you Maurits and Mark.

@Maurits: I do not know the answer to your question. I know that the Quark has a built in blocking filter, so not sure what kind of an image a D ERF in addition to that would produce. My experience is that the Sodium Quark provides a bright image that allows to get a fair image also through thin clouds.

Absolutely beautiful, I am sure I can see the Wilson effect in this sodium image :hamster: :bow

Nice bright faculae, Franco. Looking good with that sodium filter.

How do you like the Hinode?

Hi Bart: I like it ! You can also use it as a finder with large scopes, as it makes finding the sun very easy. It tracks the sun very well, I think it made a difference for me in many images. Now I am thinking of upgrading the mount.

Thanks Franco! Finding the sun is not a problem, but because I have to take everything with me in the garden my polar alignment is more or less a guess. Bought the Ioptron CEM60 (take a look at it when you are thinking about a new mount!) and that helps: I can sync to target with it. Works way better than the HEQ5 I used before, but still the sun wanders a bit. To bad the Hindode is so expensive.

Thank you Paul, Bart and Rainer !

Bart: I am in the same situation as you are, I have to assemble the scope each time in my front yard. What do you mean you when you say "sync to target with it" ? Sounds interesting...

Hi Franco,
Sync to target is useful when your slew to target is a bit off. So imagine you want to look at M31. Your mount is in the zero position, polar alignment is as good as you can get it. You let the telescope slew to M31. But you are a bit off. So you have to slew manually to M31. When it is in the center of your eyepiece you Sync to target. Your telescope thought it was pointing after the first slew to M31. But it was not. By Syncing you tell the scope what the real position is. That way your next slew to target will be much more accurate.
At this moment I put the telescope in zero position, point it North as good as I can and than let the telescope slew to the sun. It is always wrong. (-;
But not a whole lot. So with the camera mounted I can very quickly put the sun in view. Than I Sync to target and set the mount to solar tracking. It tracks the sun quite good, but not perfect. After writing this, I think I have to check the polar alignment again at night. When the mount is not perfectly aimed at polaris, then even after Syncing the tracking is not perfect.
CS! Bart.

Sure, Bart ! I am so silly... I use sync to target all the time during night observing. I had not thought of using it with the sun during the day. I will try it next time. Thanks for the tip !
