Saturday Sunshine - 4th May

Post by marktownley »

Saturday dawned clear, but with a polar airstream I knew the seeing wasn't going to be great despite the great transparency these air masses often bring us. I was looking forward to seeing the return of the active region and started my run with a full disk with the SM90 and FLIR ICX814 camera.

I wanted a look with the double stack setup and tried a few options, I think my favourite from the morning was a 4 pane mosaic with the LS50 etalon double stacked with the Quark:

Heading for a bit of a closeup on our returning active region I double stacked the SM90 with the Quark:

The great CaK experiment continues, and messing around with tilt of the filters has reduced a bit of the continuum leakage allowing the spicules and proms to be reasonably easily visible. Taken with the ED80 stopped down to 60mm double click to view full size in flickr as is much easier to see the limb features there.

Then a zoom in with the same scope etc but using a 3x barlow for a closer look at the active region:

Sadly no more time to try different scopes as we were going to a wedding on the saturday afternoon and i'd already exceeded my allowed sun time before having to get ready to travel. Will have a look what else I got, there may be a few more.

Mark

Ssshhhh! Nobody will notice Franco ;)

I went for a reprocess of the last CaK image using some shadows and highlights to bring out the spicule ring / proms

Mark, superb CaK! I would fall over to be able to image the proms & spicules in CaK with the surface.... did you have to stack a lot? Lots of processing or is it really just there with your filter configuration? Thanks!

Very best,

Very impressive CaK images, Mark. Fabulous fine prom/spicule details with that home brew setup. Impressive Ha as well.

Thanks everyone. A shot of the bright points that marked the northern boundary of the southern coronal hole that we have at the moment taken with the SM90 double stacked.
