First attempt at an animation

Post by Bruce G »

Not the best, but you gotta start somewhere. It's good to know that I left room for improvement

This is from 4 May, over a 4 1/2 hour period
Lunt LST80Ha
TeleVue 5x Powermate
ZWO ASI174MM

I was using SharpCap for acquisition for this one, but the next time I'll give it a go with Genika Astro, which sets up sequences better and also includes SSM input. SharpCap allows quality-based acquisition but the algorithm, which apparently uses a simple contrast ratio, is fooled by clouds and some other conditions. Sometimes it works great, sometimes not as well. With Genika Astro, the acquisition is controlled by the flicker observed by the SSM and I'm hoping it will do better.

Very nice animation. Long time too. (Firecapture is good for sequences and connects to ssm.)

This is a great first animation. I also use Firecapture with SSM and it works very well using the plug in developed by PDB (user on SolarChat).

Very nice animation.

Is the Genika Astro better then the "FireCapture" software?
I plan to buy the SSM monitor in the near feature and I don't know if I buy the Genika Astro software together.

The Genika Astro software was developed by the maker of the SSM, so I wanted to use that. I have tried Firecapture a couple of times and find the human interface to be clunky. I find SharpCap much easier to use. But Genika Astro is not a polished piece of software. Apologies to Frederic if he is here. While functional, the human interface appears to have evolved as various capabilities and features were added to the program. I made my living as a programmer and have been guilty of taking the same approach, so I know what it looks like. As you can see from my comments, I wasn't able to find a very important parameter while using the program despite the fact that I had found it before.

I have not attempted to use the SSM with Firecapture. Perhaps that should be the next thing for me to try

This s quite a good start. On top of that the rotation on the solar sphere is visible.
What is the parameter you didn't find ?

Christian -

I couldn't find the setting for the SSM trigger threshold. It's a slider under Options | Other
