Flare today 2019_05_15

Post by Bruce G »

Did anyone catch the flare at 19:20 UTC today?

I was running a camera, but not paying much attention to it. The seeing was downright horrible. Often the sunspot was just a blur on my screen.

I did manage to get some captures throughout the event, though several frames lost detail to the intense brightness of the flare. And my telescope was just about to drift off target. So... I managed to get a capture of the event, but not good quality. Did anyone else do better? I'll post some images as soon as I can get to them.

OK. It ain't great and I had to cheat a bit here and there, but the main thing that got me was how fast this thing is for its size. Still, low resolution data is better than no data at all.
The times are my best approximation of the middle of the capture sequence. Capture was under control of Genika Astro, using SSM input.
The frame at 19:27 was where I realized what was going on and readjusted the camera gain
