AR2741 on 14May (New image 22 May)
Clouds interrupted the imaging session several times on 14 May 19. That didn't prevent me from getting some video recording with this carbon fibre C8.

Very nice series of images, Alfred
IMHO, a bit too high contrast. This makes the umbra too dark and some desert areas too bright - a bit less natural than we see on a screen or visually.
But these images are really best your images in Ha. I hope that summer will please you will more good seeing days.

I set the gamma to 2.2. I also stepped up the contrast slightly during post processing. That probably gave a very high contrast. I have re-done the image without increasing the contrast:

Thanks for asking Mark. I will be glad to share my workflow.
First, the context: The seeing was average, it rained in the earlier part of the morning and there were many fast moving clouds. The imaging session started at 9:50am and ended at 10:55am when clouds covered the skies.
I recorded 2000 to 3000 frames at 5msec, Gain@24000, Gamma@ 2.2, 12 bit, Bin1.
Step 1: I stacked between 300 frames to 800 frames, depending on the quality of the recording. The last image was a 800 frame-stack.
Step 2: ImPPG processing with settings:
As mentioned by Valery, more more stacked frames will result in a less noisy image. I am still baffled by Christian's small number of frame stacking.
Step 3: Curve stretch in PS to get the desired image:
Step 4: Denoise
Step 5: Level adjustment
As you can see from the above, I have done every little post processing to preserve the details as they are captured.
I am still working on my post-processing techniques to improve it further. The aim is to keep the fidelity of the captured image and bring out the details without over doing it.
I welcome comments and also am open to learning from anyone.

Dear Valery,
I use a Celestron 2x barlow and that fine PST etalon that I bought from you. I believe it is capable of producing even better quality image.
I put a tilt adjuster before the basler camera:
I believe that brings the magnification to slightly above x2.

It is a 10" f/20 TEC Maksutov, as also a 12" f/10 Meade SCT, both with very good optics.

If you do use the same Basler 1920-155 camera as I do, and the same FireCapture software, then always use gamma settings from 180 to 200 when imaging the surface details and 145 to 160 gamma when imaging near limb with intention to capture spots, spiculaes and brighter proms simultaneously. Barlow should be 2x - 2.5x.

Thanks Stu. I hope to get the ARIES D-ERF for the C11 and C14 to work soon. I heard that carbon fibre SCT are not so good for high-resolution imaging. The CF C8 seems to be ok. My C11 is also CF. It will be interesting to see how it works out.

Tried another form of post-processing. Do you like this better?
I have changed the processing to see more of the light bridge in the umbra. There is a trade-off, lesser contrast. Is this image to your liking?

Hi Alfred: it is a different way of doing it, but I like it a lot. A softer processing, still maintains a lot of detail.

1. The first lot of 4 were formed using 300 frame-stacked images and I applied dark levels and contrast quite excessively resulting in an umbra that lost some of the light bridges
2. The 5th image was the result of a 800 frame-stacked image and with lesser dark level and lesser contrast - the result was a less contrasty image but more details in the umbra were unveiled.
3. The 6th image was the result of a 1250 frame-stack, also with lesser dark level and lesser contrast - the image was less noisy and I was able to apply more deconvolution. Brian finds this image especially sharp and Stu also like this best.
Recently I have stacked more frames to be able to do more deconvolution with ImPPG and get less noisy image. I am still puzzled by how Christian is able to get very clean image with less than 10 frame stacking. Can Christian share shed some light on it?

I am not Christian, but I can express my guess how he does his excellent images with small number of stacked frames. Christian can obtain near perfect images in a perfect seeing conditions. See: perfect seeing conditions, excellent telescope, excellent technique to record movies, SSM selects best seeing moments = at least 10 - 30 perfect frames which are stacked and processed by his own workflow.
