June 23rd Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

Sunday offered a great day to get out for solar work, seasonal weather and nice deep blue sky treated me after breakfast. Initial views in WL showed a blank disk again, but there were some small disk features in Ha despite the typical seeing (SSM rarely was better than 3 :? )

The Ha FD preview on the monitor showed that there was a lot more of interest. There was a filament on the NE quadrant, several faint proms, and 3 little regions in a line near the equator. The middle one was showing some activity. Below is a full disk composite through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1200Ha solar scope with the PGR ICX674 chipped camera (limb inverted):

I set the iStar 150mm, f8 scope up for WL and CaK...at the very least the 3 Ha spots should show something in CaK. The FD WL below uses a Lunt Solar Wedge/Baader Continuum filter and the CaK used a modified Lunt Solar Wedge/B1800CaK filter with a Baader K-Line filter mounted in the camera nosepiece. Both images were taken with the ZWO ASI1600MM camera:

I changed over to the modded CR-150/DSII/B1800Ha scope to try some higher resolution images of the proms and small regions of activity. The proms did not turn out, but below is a 2 frame mosaic of the area around the small active regions:

I had time to do some testing and finally managed to get the attempt to DS the modded CR-150/DSII etalon with the Quark Combo...and after a lot of testing found the right amount of extension to get the Quark to focus. The image below is the area around the active region through the DS system:
3x_CR150_DSII-QRK_15_28_18-ASI.jpg

3x_CR150_DSII-QRK_15_28_18-ASI-fc.jpg (413.15 KiB) Viewed 1229 times
The contrast certainly improved, though how much the bandwidth changed is not something I can assess...input for those more experienced in modded DS systems might be able to share their thoughts. Also, the tuning on both etalons was a trial and error. The Quark was left in the 'middle' setting, but the pressure in the DSII was increased quite a bit to get the FOV to illuminate more evenly (into the blue wing).

Two issues I found and wasn't able to solve before I had to close up are shown on the images below.
3x_CR150_DSII-QRK_15_36_27-ASI.jpg

3x_CR150_DSII-QRK_15_37_24-ASI.jpg (207.72 KiB) Viewed 1229 times
The first image is the DS system with no flat applied in Firecapture...note the bright band just right of center. The second image is a long exposure that shows either a reflection or ghost on the right. If I let the scope drift to have the sun more centered, the ghost overlaps the image and results in the un-even illumination shown in the first image. I rotated the Quark in relation to the DSII etalon and the reflection rotated as well, keeping its position relative to the bright primary image. I also tried a polarizer in the camera nosepiece, but that did nothing either.

Any suggestions on the cause and removal of the 'ghost'?

Just to close, the proms actually came through in the DS mode, the poor seeing didn't help but nice to catch them:

Nice set of images there Brian, always fun to get a good run in, also nice some activity developed.

The ghost image definitely looks like a reflection to me, it seems to have the same profile size as the solar limb / disk. Are you using the BF1800 with this setup, or just the Quark in the back of the PT module?

Hi Eric and Mark...

Thanks for your feedback on the images, appreciated as always :bow

Mark, this was the first successful try double stacking the two and I only had the Quark mounted after the DSII etalon (with sufficient spacers to reach focus). If I was to use the B1800Ha blocker I assume I have to modify the quark?

I need a few sunny days to experiment with it more, but first light looks promising.

Hi Brian,

Interesting tests with the DS-quark combination.

Reflections are always removable with time, trial and error!

Nice images, Brian. Half the fun is solving these issues with new configurations. It can be frustrating, but as Mark says, they are usually solvable.

Good luck.

Alfred and Stuart...

Thanks for your comments on the session...much appreciated :bow

The reflection reminds me a lot of the 'ghost' that was present in the DS tilt tuned etalons and you could adjust the tuning and move them out of the field...just need the time to play with it a bit. Sad part of the Daystar etalon is the time needed to stabilize after changing the tuning, so it will take more time to find the optimum settings.
