Friday Sun 2nd August '19_Updated with new images

Post by Carbon60 »

It'll be back to rain tomorrow, but this morning was beautiful, giving me time to try out a new Baader continuum filter on my Lacerta Wedge and collect a few images across the spectrum at various scales.

First up, the Lacerta solar wedge/continuum full disk. This is a mosaic or four images taken on my Technosky 125mm:

Image20190802_FD_WL_x2.5_Mosaic by Stuart Green, on Flickr

and in colour....

Image20190802_FD_WL_x2.5_Colour_Mosaic by Stuart Green, on Flickr

I was keen to see the granulation close up, so I switched over to a 5x Powermate and fortunately the seeing conditions were kind.

So I think that's my WL imaging sorted.

Then over to CaK and a full disk on my Altair Astro 72mm fitted with a Lunt B600 module/Baader K-line and Omega filter:

And another close view, now using my Technosky 125mm stopped to 110mm, still with the B600/Ca-K line/Omega on a Basler acA 1920-155um:

Image20190802_CaK_x5_Mono by Stuart Green, on Flickr

Image20190802_CaK_x5_Colour by Stuart Green, on Flickr

I think that's my CaK imaging setup sorted, although I'd prefer a B1200 or B1800 CaK module on the larger scope....maybe next year :)

I finished up with a Ha FD mosaic, but the tuning was a little bit out.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

ooooh they look good Stuart! :hamster: :bow the WL is very crisp and lovely granulation. It is amazing how a Continuum filter can make them pop. The CaK are great too, interesting bright point in the far north, and some very nice close ups too, what mag were they taken at?

You had a good run today, I was lazy and despite sun between the clouds didn't go out. I'm hoping for some breakfast shots tomorrow now. Lets see if the bright point stays there till dawn. I'm envious of your fridays!

Many thanks, everyone.

Alexandra, the CaK close views were taken using a x5 Powermate.

Here are my hydrogen alpha FDs from the same day in monochrome and colour, although the tuning was a little asymmetric, giving a darker patch on the left when the 6 pane mosaics were assembled.

Additionally some continuum granulation (@ 540 nm) using the Tecnosky 125/Basler acA1920-155um/2.5 x Powermate combination with a Lacerta solar wedge/continuum filter.

Fantastic extras Stuart :hamster:

Can I ask you to try again with the WL granulation butthis time knocking the ImPPG processing back and right down. At the moment your granules are very round and lumpy, it seems counter intuitive and it won't look very sharpened but if you only do a very slight sharpening, then take it into Photoshop to improve the contrast you will see that the granulation becomes flat irregular shapes instead. Try it and see what you think.

Hi Alexandra,

Thanks for the tip.

I've bypassed ImPPG and gone straight to PixInsight. A bit of image sharpening and histogram manipulation to boost the contrast. A little less rounded/lumpy :)

....and, for comparison, the original version again:

Image20190802_Continuum_x5_Mono by Stuart Green, on Flickr

I'm always happy to learn.

Also, I'm sure there's more to be done at the scope with the camera settings.

Cheers

Stu.

Hi Stuart...

The added Ha and WL images are great, and the granulation in the high res WL is superb :bow

Both the original and the Pixinsight hi res images have their own merits, thought he less aggressive is preferred.
