CaK Saturday 24th August

Post by Montana »

Well, lovely weekend so far. We saw this 2 weeks ago on the Jetstream forecast and they were right, the Jetstream has moved north and we have good weather :)

We had already booked tickets for the Churnet Valley Heritage Steam Railway for my birthday treat so as it was clear first thing I was out at the crack of dawn with the C11 (well I was ready for 9am when the Sun appeared in my garden).

I am not sure whether the seeing was good or bad as I have no reference but after 10 captures I only had one which was half decent. I had to stop the C11 down to 18cm as that seems the point where spherical aberration is removed and contrast appears and focus is possible. I also used the 2x Barlow as anything more was daft. I learned a lot.

I processed one with AstraImage and the same picture with ImPPG and they seem pretty similar to me.

First two are AstraImage, the second two are ImPPG. I am sure seeing wasn't as good as it could be but you never know until I have done at least 10 try outs.

C11 stopped to 18cm / Lunt CaK wedge / Aries ERF / 2x Barlow / ZWO ASI174

I then packed away and hurried off to catch the 11:02 train :)

Happy Birthday, Alexandra. A lovely day out :)

I can’t see any difference between process methods either. Nice images.

Both are great captures! Like Stu says there's no obvious difference between the 2 processing software, I guess stick with the easiest. What sort of exposure time were you using for the images above?

Happy birthday btw! Churnet Valley looks like fun.

Hi Alexandra...

The CaK images look great and both processing methods look very similar to me. Well done :bow

Happy Birthday, and the hertiage train looks to be a wonderful way to spend it too!

Interesting results.
Your final focal ratio would then be around 30.
What was your exposure time?

Hi Alexandra,

Wow!! Congrats!! Is this your first light with the Lunt CaK wedge?

I have all items (ARIES D-ERF, C11, Lunt CaK wedge, ASI174 camera) but I am not sure if I can get great CAK images like yours.

Thanks guys, yes this is my first light with the Aries ERF and the repaired Lunt CaK wedge. My first try out so I know I can do better :hamster: I look forward to some spots as trying to focus on a blank background is hard. I also need to get my head around a PST modification, no money for that yet though.

Alex my exposure with the ASI174 was 5.789ms

Good enough starting result.

You should not go below 230mm aperture stop. Anything below this will cause contrast loss for details due to central obstruction too high influence.
With 230mm aperture your scope will work at 0,74 Strehl ratio at 393nm. With R-L deconvolution the images will be very close to what can be achieved with Strehl 1.0

Do your imaging in the CaK in a proper time (early morning) with aperture stop 230-240mm and you will have all chances to get excellent images.
