Aug 25th FDs plus a few more + 27th+29

Post by Astrophil »

Hi,
I've had a change to image the last few mornings with the LS80. The scope seems to work well but I have some concerns about the operator. It's difficult to get good detail around the entire disk so more practice is needed.
Attached are todays images with various processing and a few more whimsical versions from days gone by. Some double stacked some single.

Phil

"It's difficult to get good detail around the entire disk so more practice is needed."
I had in the past a SM60 with a tuner, and there was always some kind of banding.
I find your pics very fine. But would you look for more uniformity, try different things to locate the reason: rotate the camera, rotate Etalon 1 vs Etalon 2 (if possible), change tuning, etc.

Looking really good there, Phil. Very nice! Those final tiny tweaks make all the difference and it looks like you’ve nailed it.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. The full disk images still have a loss of detail near the limb at the 7 o'clock position when centering the sun in the frame. By reducing image scale and moving the sun around the field helped but I like the larger image scale. Changing Barlows and distances produced slightly different results as well. This is a single stacked LS80 pressure tuned system. Could tuning effect focus?

I spent quite a bit of time on the 27th trying various approaches and saw some improvement in the region of concern. Processed extra crispy to show detail. I seem to push the trial and error techniques to the max.

You do have to play around with position, I have to get my PST in the very bottom left corner for the best image, that is what the crop tool is for :)

These are lovely full discs :bow

The etalon just wont be dead centre in the cell, I had (have) the same thing with a Lunt50. I had to site the image off centre, similar thing but much lesser extent with my SM90.

Well, to wrap this up, let me say thanks for all the great suggestions. They are most helpful. I gave it one more try today hoping to get even detail around the disk. Removing the Barlow completely gave lots of room on the chip to move the disk around and provided the freedom to find a better location. Upper right in this scope. Of course dropping the disk size from 2000px to 1500px removed significant detail but seemed to even it out. So far I'm not quite as pleased with the LS80 as I could be.

Today's sun showed some interesting proms.

Phil:
Super FD´s, can not suggest anything because I don't have a Lunt filter, but have played long with Coronado´s old and new so to tell that had to do all sorts of adjustments in every possible position of etalons, BF´s, cameras, etc...,until found the best setup for my combination of scopes filters et al.
It takes a lot of time but it is worth.
Best wishes,
Eric.

Great FD I mages Phil. I find them very uniform. This is indicative that you have a great LUNT80 and a matched BF. BFs make all the difference. I use a Coronado BF30 all the time. It is much better that others I have and use (Coronado BF10, BF15, LUNT B3200)

Thank you Marty. I do hope you all and your scopes are well protected. Maybe we'll get lucky.

Pedro, That's encouraging to know. Thanks.

Hi Phil, you're a perfectionist like me with things like this ;)

Now you have the position in the fov where you are happy with uniformity try a custom spacing with the barlow nosepiece to the chip, you will be able to increase the scale so that you find that maximum image size that fits where the image remains uniform. Will be less than the original, but bigger than the last images. You could also try sharpening at a smaller pixel radius with more iterations than you have, you may find this preserves smaller scale detail better.

Mark
