Lovely big prom today | Sept 15th 2019
Heya,
Mostly cloudy today, rained off and on, couldn't get a serious session in. I was doing visual with my PST while the kids were playing in the yard. Noticed a fine prom, maybe a deteriorating hedgerow, on the North of the disc that was pretty bright and had a lot of definition and it seemed paired and the second to it looked like it may just lift off at any time so I watched it a while. I tempted fate and took a peak with a bigger scope and managed to see it. Seeing was dreadful since it was 2pm in the afternoon. Truly bad. But managed to get a little bit of something to go off. I didn't have enough clear sky time to use a smaller scale so I had to suffer the seeing. It's still out there and quite nice to see in some binos!

Yessir, all my latest work is done with the ASI290MM. I find it works great for solar, it's very sensitive to the wavelengths and IR unlike other small pixel sensors. The global shutter is not a problem either. The surface images were at F10, 2.2ms exposure time, 0 gain at 62FPS with a flat frame (the flat frame automatically slows it down by over 20+ FPS in firecapture I find).

I moved over to the 290 from the IMX178 sensor for small pixel work, while it has fewer pixels and a smaller sensor, it's well suited to high resolution solar system photography just as it is used for planetary imaging to avoid needing barlows/powermates, adding more glass and more loss of transmission, reflections, etc. The 290 sensor is more sensitive in the IR range which is great for solar and lunar and it's a fast throughput camera so high FPS is there for imaging. I've been putting it through all the paces and so far it's pretty much replaced my IMX174 sensor too. My systems can all be F10 or F21 so ideally matching to the small pixels or the large pixels in the deep red and IR wavelengths, so why use the IMX174 and extra glass to get to F21 or use reducers to get down to F21 when I can just shoot at F10 with the 290's 2.9um pixels and no added glass. I have been meaning to get a 290M for years, not just for solar - even thou I am no expert I always thought to main thing is you get rid of lenses in between, but never been sure - I saw Solar images done with that camera and they were stunning!
Great to know, useful for high magnification on Moon and Planets too!
ADDITION: but probably better get the USB3 one for higher frame rate - although it depends on computer USB bandwidth anyway!
One to think about ... will test my 178M USB3 and USB 2 to see the 'real' difference.
This Laptop has only 3x USB2 + 1x USB3 by using the blooming express card and I never used it for 178M USB3 - but I do have a very good USB Hub with own 2.5A PSU - will try that now and see what happens - just on the table, no sun visible today!
I also checked using Filed of View and Stellarium to see real magnification and I see it is about 30% more than 178M.
290M Results

I hope I did not get the details wrong on the 178M and I believe this was what made me stop to buy the 290M, but I never thought about the fact of less lenses in the middle!
I also wished to get the 290M as a Guider for Deep Sky, instead of using the 178M.
QE seems to be about the same ~75% and the 178M at 75% is pretty good I have seen the impossible to see with this camera and the colour one too - seeing Orion Nebula live on screen and in particular the Trapezium using the LX200 R - just stunning!

When you bin the pixels of the IMX178 to 4.8um, you also are going to have to extend the focal-ratio to achieve critical sampling. The beauty of 2.4um pixels is that it matches well to F9 focal-ratios for 656nm. But, it does it with slow FPS due to the large pixel array. Binning to 4.8um effectively requires you to now need F18 focal-ratio for 656nm to critically sample. So while it will increase FPS, it also requires a 2x barlow inline (more glass, more gradients, more dust surfaces, etc).
That said, the efficiency and sensitivity at 656nm is not the same. The 290MM is more sensitive. I used to use the IMX178 in the same focal-ratios and the 290MM fills the histogram with less gain. I can't explain why though.
For me though, having the IMX174, IMX178 and 290 sensors, I use the 290 more often. Less glass. No reducers. No barlows/extenders. Less dust. Less problems. Less insignificant transmission loss to other things in the imaging train. Less gradients to fix. Faster focal-ratio. And this camera has high FPS on its own without binning or doing any of that.
But again, at the end of the day, real world results, the 290 is more sensitive than the IMX178 and there's no need to bin and then use a barlow to get the sampling right with the focal-ratio. So I sold my IMX178 after using these three sensors. If I get another large small pixel sensor, it would be the IMX183 probably. But for now, I'm finding the 290 does the job for all of this more efficiently with less stuff in the imaging train.

USB2 version maxes out at 20FPS full pixel array.
USB3 version maxes out at 82FPS (12bit), 170FPS (10bit).
I wouldn't even consider a USB2 interface speed for imaging anything more than course scale, full disc FOV.
