The active region is still looking good. Here are two closeups taken with the 6' Mak. A focal reducer on the first image.

Phil,
I would love to see how color shows these. Either in yellow-orange or Ha red.

Thanks! for the comments. I was genuinely surprised that the images turned out as well as they did. For the second image I could only find a section of video (157 frames) that looked good and I stacked the 50 best. Seemed to work.

James, funny you mentioned a colorized version as I had planned to do one. I saw an earlier comment of yours about color. but I forgot. Anyway, I tried to remember what the sun looked like visually and colorize one. I can't see Ha very well nor this image either so it may be close. By the way, your observations are impressive to me.

The first image is really good. The combination of the Q6 and Solar Spectrum works very well.
Years ago, I had a Quantum 8 ...

Christian,

Wow! A Q8. Those were a rare breed with only a very few ever delivered. I had already purchased a Q6 before they went into production. Decades ago I remember seeing some nice planetary images taken with one. Superior to the Quantum Six.

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,
When I first got my Ha scope I had high expectations of seeing all the dramatic detail shown in your photos through the eyepiece. When I first looked through the eyepiece all I saw was a big red ball. I struggled to see anything on it at all. I wondered if my scope was defective. However after doing research I realized the eye isn't that sensitive to the red light of Hydrogen Alpha, though more so than Cak or CaH. And I learned about tuning the etalons and that the contrast was pretty low. So using the skills I learned in observing fine planetary detail, learned how to tune and bought a second etalon to increase contrast, though still not as much as I was hoping, I learned how to pick out low contrast detail in the Ha image. I do still struggle at times. Getting the etalons on band, moving the Coronado's sweet spot around the field to view features, finding the right magnification, etc. I still wonder if I bought the right scope. It seems most people here prefer Lunt over Coronado. A DayStar Quark would have been cheaper and I could have put it on one of my nighttime refractors. I do love solar though. It's immune to light pollution and can be done at convenient times and is more resistant to cloudy weather than deep-sky observing. But it certainly does have a learning curve. But so does deep-sky and planetary observing. I am always up for a challenge! And thank you for the compliment!!! I feel well behind you imagers who do such high quality professional-grade work.

And I picked solar minimum to dive in!

My first and best view of a prominence I will never forget. One seen at 70x through my old Traq 60mm refractor. Rosy-magenta and delicate in appearance. During the 2017 Total solar eclipse!

And I love the red image! It appeals to a visual observer like me.

James
